BPS and the Residents' Parking Scheme - A Message From The Chairman
I thought I should write a few words about the current situation.

We don’t know yet whether the Residents Parking Scheme will make it easier or harder for BPS members to find parking spaces although I doubt it will be the former. We do know that the Council’s latest proposals, which require payment for parking up to 9pm, will have a negative impact upon BPS members. I have written a formal complaint to the Council about this. Thankfully, we are not alone and the Clifton Traders are taking their protests to a new level.
Should these protests be unsuccessful and charges are implemented then BPS may lose a significant number of members. So what should we, could we do?

BPS Council has been quietly looking for alternate premises but the fact that Parking Schemes will cover all Bristol within 5 years means we really need somewhere with access to off-street parking. Such places are few and far between and most are beyond the means of BPS. We also need to be mindful that, when it was proposed that BPS might move from Clifton to larger premises in Bishopsworth over 30% of members who responded said they would leave BPS if we moved away from Clifton. It would be very bad for BPS to have all the expense of a move and then lose a third of its members.

If we do find any premises that look suitable then Council will provide all the details to the membership and ask the members who would and who would not support the move. At the same time Council will be looking for commitments from 2 to 4 (suitably skilled) members to join Council with specific responsibility for the massive task of selling 12 WestMall, purchasing and then managing the inevitable refurbishment of the new premises. These tasks would require many hours of work, over many months and the existing Council members could not just add this to their current workload.

So we do not have any easy path forward. Either staying in Clifton or moving elsewhere we are likely to lose members in the short term. Financially, BPS could survive a drop in membership if we stay in West Mall. Alternatively, if we incur the expense of moving and then lose members it could become financially critical for BPS.

Personally, I am hopeful that the Clifton Traders will win the argument and the parking scheme will not apply after 7pm.

Also, personally speaking, as BPS has been in the Clifton area for over a hundred years I would like think it will still be thriving and still in Clifton in a hundred years time.

Dates For Your Diary
26 April is the date this year for the annual BPS pilgrimage to the Woodford Point to Point races. The event, as its name suggests, is held at Woodford which is 15 miles north of Bristol on the A38 and has provided a good opportunity for members to photograph this type of event for the past few years. There are no fences to separate the public from the horses so you can get really close to the action. For further details, please follow this link
Don't worry if you don't normally follow the gee gees, it's always a good day out (weather permitting) with a mix of racing on one section of the area and a small tented village containing a myriad of horsey stalls (and people) and, of course, the parade ring. If you want to know a bit more, have a word with me at any of the next few Wednesday meetings.

WCPF Members Annual Exhibition 2014 is being held at Buckfast Abbey from 3 to 18 May. Entry is free. More details available on the WCPF website.
