 SPOTLIGHT ON KENT
~
Whitstable Beach

As we have recently been exploring this ‘Garden of England’ region at the South East corner of Britain – this seemed a good moment to  share a few gems from this county of contrasts.

With easy access from London, the Thames Estuary marks the northern boundary of the county and the rolling countryside spreads out from there - to its lovely beaches and iconic white cliffs. With historic landmarks around every corner, a walking or cycling tour in Kent is a great way to experience the variety the region has to offer – which may be why our Kent trips are so popular!

Each of our tours starts in Canterbury – site of the oldest Cathedral in the UK and definitely worth taking plenty of time and a guided tour to really get a feel for the 1400 years of history embodied within.

From Canterbury you may choose to cycle towards the coast on ‘A Kent Seaside Jolly’ and meander along the sea wall stopping for an ice cream in some trendy seaside spots along the way.  Or take a longer trip and combine the coast with the chalk downs and medieval towns and an overnight stay at Leeds Castle on our 'Kent Garden of England'.

If you like a good walk and a castle or two then look no further than our Coast and Castles in Kent tour that also includes Deal and Walmer Castles and Richborough Roman Fort lovingly cared for by English Heritage.

Of course no Carter Company trip would be complete without those hidden gems and local secrets and a few of our favourite discoveries are listed below to whet your appetite!

Happy browsing!
    TEMPTING TIPPLES
The fertile soil and mild Kent climate is perfect for growing hops and you can’t go far without spotting an oast house. Whilst Britain's oldest brewery Shepherd Neame has been Kent based since 1698, there are now some wonderful new artisan brewers includng Canterbury Brewers and Distillers where Jon loves to share his handmade beers and spirits. If gin is more your thing Maidstone Distillery offers a fascinating history of 'Mother's Ruin' and a chance to sample their proudly handcrafted spirits.

  TASTY TREATS
Famous for its oysters Whitstable has some great fish restaurants including the Lobster Shack on the quay, and if the tides are right you can take a tour of the oyster beds.  Reads in Faversham is a favourite restaurant with rooms on our luxury tours, and next door to Macknade Food Hall showcasing Kent produce and offering various tasting experiences. In Canterbury The Goods Shed food market and Restaurant is another not to be missed.

If you prefer grape to grain, Kent is also home to many of England’s best wineries, producing wonderful sparkling wines. Since their Brut Rose first won a gold medal in 2007, The Balfour Winery has gathered many more accolades and as well as tours of their Hush Heath Estate, you can pop in for lunch. Several of the regions wineries including Gusbourne and Chapel Down have got together to offer tasting trails and tours - watch this space!

  CASTLES AND CULTURE
We love a good castle and as well as those mentioned above, don't miss Norman Canterbury Castle. Add a couple of extra days to your tour and stay at Hever Castle and visit Sissinghurst or Tonbridge or add an extra day to visit Dover one of the largest and most strategically important castles of all. Since 2011 Turner Contemporary one of the UK's leading contemporary art galleries leads  the way in the resurgance of Margate - England's original seaside town.
