Next week our speaker is Pedro Landers CPAGB who will be treating us to his talk entitled An Eye To The Hills #3. Pedro has the following to say about himself and what we can expect:
When we moved to the US in 2007 I had already started to think about improving my photographic capability because of an image of Half Dome I took on a little point and shoot in 2004.

With a better camera I thought I could do better so for the 6 years we lived in rural New Hampshire I carried a Canon Digital Rebel around on all our mountaineering trips and started to improve.
In about 2011 we joined Monadnock Camera Club – in my late 50s I was the second youngest member of 15 people, but it was a good start. I had just retired back to the UK in 2013 when I was offered a 2 year contract just North of Seattle so I went and my wife stayed in the UK setting up our retirement home. Having moved away from my mountaineering buddies in New Hampshire my photography started to take over from the serious mountaineering. Not that I stopped playing in the local mountains as you will see.
I got into wildlife photography which is a lot easier in Western Washington State than it is in the UK – like this image from the edge of a parking lot:
So two years turned into two and a half and then there was a little project on the way home – 18 months at a sister company just north of Boston.
By this time I was really into my photography and had been associated with at least 6 Camera Clubs.
Growing into photography in places that I got to know well but were not home territory (and also not holiday destinations) means I saw the place differently to the locals and to the tourists. I concentrated on a few good locations and got to know them well – rather than visiting somewhere new each weekend and never getting to understand the location and the wildlife. My presentation is a mix of genres – a lot of wildlife but also landscapes, mountains, people and odd bits of Americana. Even a few attempts at “arty” stuff. |
Have a look at Pedro's website to see more examples of his work.

DI Group club/zoom meeting 12 February, 7.30 pm
Last month Rachel showed in her introduction to Affinity Photo software that it can be a great alternative to the popular Photoshop and she has proved it by winning so many club competitions. Rachel’s link to the Affinity’s website and a link to their video tutorials is: https://affinity.serif.com.
Sean d'Rozario also sent a link to Skill Share website on a whole range of topics including Affinity Photo: www.skillshare.com
The next meeting of the DI group is on Monday 12 February in a few days’ time and is in the regular format of presentations submitted by members. It is open to all BPS members to share their images in an informal atmosphere. If you are planning to submit them for competitions, exhibitions or experimenting it is a good opportunity to invite comments on your images from your fellow members. You are also welcome to just sit and watch the proceedings if you wish.
Please submit your images before the meeting. It allows me to prepare for a smooth presentation using just one folder in advance. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation (about 2 to 20 minutes) to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 11 January. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox link if convenient.

Judging of the Bristol Salon takes place this weekend and members are invited to pop along to see the action! Judging of the Colour & Monochrome prints and digital images will take place on Friday with a probable overrun into Saturday morning, Nature prints and digital will be judged on Sunday.
Judging is scheduled to start at 10am each day, so it would be great if any audience members are settled before then to avoid disturbing the judges. Please note, if you do turn up, that whilst we don't expect you to take a monastic vow of silence, we do need members of the audience to stay quiet during the actual judging.
If your planned stay includes the period across lunchtime, you will either need to bring a packed lunch or pop out to one of the many eateries in the area.

Print Competition - Important Rules Reminder |
Recent reminders about upcoming print competitions have carried the following words:
It’s essential that you supply a digital copy of each print you enter. This should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there is no need to give any other information than your name and the title. You don’t need to add your membership number or level of entry. Please make sure that you upload the digital copies of your prints via this link: bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload
It is evident that some entrants have not been doing this, resulting in David, the Competition Secretary, having to chase these errant members. David is far too nice a chap to say anything, so I'll do it for him: would members please remember that it was decreed some little while ago that "no upload, no judging" - you have been warned!

If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
