FORREST LEO
The Gentleman
Tuesday, August 1 at 7 PM

Dear Reader,

So, it's the middle of the night, and I simply cannot contain my enthusiasm. I immediately begin Tweeting my love like a crazy person. Then I think, Is this guy coming to San Francisco on tour? A quick visit to his website confirms that by a staggering coincidence, he'll be in San Francisco that very night! Alas, I'm hosting another author at our store, so I can't go hear him speak. I continue Tweeting like a crazy lady, inviting Forrest to drop by BookShop West Portal to sign stock - and he does, that very afternoon. The rest is history.

Forrest turns out to be as delightful in person as he is on the page. I act like a goofy fan girl, and I believe that I am Forrest's very first mega-fan. I continue to love The Gentleman and sell many copies in hardcover. (I just reread it, BTW, and adored it just as much the second time around.) And when it's time for the paperback tour, Forrest remembers the crazy lady in San Francisco. He's launching his tour at BookShop West Portal!

Now, remember I said I sold a bunch of copies of this book in hardcover? Those customers came back to tell me how much they, too, loved The Gentleman. So, it's not just me. This is what I wrote a year ago:

Let me just cut to the chase: This is the funniest, freshest, most wonderful book I’ve read in ages! I love, love, love it! Victorian poet Lionel Savage finds himself bereft of funds, a situation he remedies by marrying Vivien Lancaster. Six months in, the two hate each other and Lionel’s ability to write has deserted him. One thing leads to another, Vivien disappears, and Lionel realizes that he may have accidentally sold her to the Devil, who is a rather nice fellow, actually. He also realizes that he does love his wife after all. A rescue mission is planneds with the best cast of characters ever assembled. It’s a farce and, as one character exclaims, “By Christ, it’s an adventure!” Oh, this book made me happy!

The novel has received comparisons to everyone from Monty Python to P.G. Wodehouse, and I'm going to add local favorite Christopher Moore into that mix. I'm so incredibly delighted to be welcoming Forrest back to BookShop West Portal to talk about his debut novel this Tuesday, August 1st at 7:00pm. If you can't tell, I'm an evangelist for this book. It's selfish, really. I want him to have many, many fans and a long, successful career.

I sure hope you'll join Forrest and I at the store tomorrow night! Seriously, you will thank me.

Best,

Susan
