Success story for botanists, rare species: new data show endangered Rock Cress more common than previously thought.
December 14, 2015
Virginia Natural Heritage Program botanists have found numerous new populations of the Shale Barren Rock Cress, a species once thought to be close to extinction. They are working with the Washington National Forest to secure permanent protection of the Rock Cress in the Special Interest Areas and Special Biological Areas that have already been designated as its key habitat.
The table is set to de- or down-list this species once feared as likely to go extinct.
This episode demonstrates once again that proper management of rare species and other natural resources requires trained professionals and frequent review of the evidence.
