HARROGATE GEM N BEAD FAIR

Everyone loves Harrogate. It takes us over 5-hours to get there, but it’s great! And no snow forecast this year. Great Yorkshire Showground is easy to get to and has loads of free parking. Open from 1am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday – with last entry an hour before closing on each day.

The show is in two halls, so the best way to navigate on entry is to walk through to the second hall, then make your way back. This way you’ll beat the crowds. Be sure to walk round and check everything before parting with your hard earned cash! Most traders take cards, but it’s a good idea to bring some real money too, just in case.

SELL JEWELLERY ONLINE

You MUST establish an online presence to sell your designs. You can do this through an established jewellery selling market – they do all marketing for you, but charge a lot. Or through third-part website software – where you build and market your own store.

HOW TO SELL JEWELLERY ONLINE

Some sell their designs on Facebook, which is great if you can make it work – but most beaders need sites that do the selling for them. Or building your own website if you can promote. There’s three main ways to sell jewellery on the internet:

Etsy
Although based in the US, many home jewellery makers in the UK do very well here. They specialise selling handcraft goods, and is massive with over 54-million users worldwide. For inspiration, take a look at the jewellery already listed click here. Great for well-designed jewellery with good photographs.

Ebay
Not as good as it was because there’s too many sellers – but easy to join and list. MrBead was one of Hong Kong’s largest eBay sellers 20-years ago (so they told us!), but we stopped selling there ages ago as it’s too competitive. However, if you can make a quantity of designs that are appealing and not too expensive, this could be an easy outlet for you. Buyers look for free shipping, so add costs to the price.

Other Markets
TickTok is brilliant to sell from. One visitor at a bead fair told me she only started selling jewellery a month ago, and has already taken over £5,000 using TickTok! However, you need to be creative and good at making short, catchy videos. Another powerful outlet is Not On The High Street. Great for established sellers of quality jewellery. There’s a jewellery shop in Norwich, taking over £5-million here!

Own Website
Gives you more control, but you need some marketing skills, otherwise no one will find your site. These days it’s easy to build a website with many companies offering simple software to allow anyone to setup an online shop.

I like GoDaddy, as it’s inexpensive with good 24-7 support – but other easy-to-use website builders with great templates are Wix.com, Squarespace.com, weebly.com. If you’re serious, go for Shopify as we did on the new MrBead Shop. Shopify hosts over a million stores globally, and although not the cheapest (from about £30 a month), is easy to use with fantastic e-commerce features. They make their money processing your payments – so transaction costs are a little high.

Website builders make it very easy using templates to construct a site with e-commerce to sell. Even if you have no experience working online. The software does everything for you – all you need is the imagination to choose an appropriate style for your brand. However, although it’s easy to build a website: the hard part is getting customers to see it. Like opening a brick-and-mortar store in a back street.

Unless you market your own website well, you won’t sell anything. You must enter this colossal market in a tiny niche – or better still, a niche within a niche. That way you can compete and beat the big boys.

Photography
Whichever way you choose online, a good photograph is the most important aspect to sell well. It must show your jewellery close and clear, and will usually need editing and contrast boosting. However, most mobile phones and tablit computers do the job. For more detail go to How To Take Photos That Sell. Once you get a system that works, it’s easy to duplicate and scale-up – as long as you can make enough designs.

MOTHER’S DAY

When Is Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day 2022 in the UK is Sunday 19th March. In the US it’s Sunday 14th May.

British History
During the 1600’s, England celebrated “Mothering Sunday” on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter). Then, many of the England’s poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most were employed far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants had the day off and encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers.

Mothering Sunday Around the World
In the United States Mother’s Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace. Until 1914 when Ana Jarvis, with the help of the church, persuaded President Woodrow Wilson to make the second Sunday of May a national holiday in honor of the anniversary of her mother’s death. However, many countries celebrate Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year – except Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium who also celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

Jewellery Is The Best Present for Mum, Daughters & the Ladies in Your Life
What do you give to Mother? She longs for something special, but already has everything. The gifts that mean the most, are the ones that have memories attached to them.

Mother’s say that every time they receive something special from their children, they remember the exact circumstances for the gift. One of the most cherished gifts has got to be a charm bracelet. Make a special necklace or bracelet as a gift for your mother and mother-in-law this year – or purchase one already made. Jewellery is always appreciated, and gains sentimental value with age, allowing Mother to always remember who it came from. Pearls are great – as are any pink or warm-coloured stone jewellery.
