From the Church Guy
Remember the good old days?  You should...it's good for you.

I've been reading a number of books lately explaining some of the latest research in brain science.  Some of the studies offer solid guidance on gaining greater happiness.  One finding is that nostalgia -- remembering good times in the past -- boosts happiness.  So remember the good stuff!

We are coming to a powerful week in the church year.  In Holy Week, we do a special kind of remembering, as we commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus, and his cross, and his resurrection.  People who study liturgy use the New Testament Greek word for this special way of remembering:  "anamnesis." This idea is behind the old song, "Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"  In liturgy and worship, we are there again, with Jesus in the Upper Room, in the Garden of Gethsemane, on Golgotha hill, and at the empty tomb.

Anamnesis, "doing this for the remembrance" of Jesus, leads to resurrection joy, as surely as remembering good stuff boosts our happiness.  Neurology and liturgy both point us in the same direction!  So let's enter into the deep meaning and great joy of this holy time.

Holy Week at St. Mark's
The week from Palm Sunday to Easter Day is the highest, holiest season of the Church Year.  Easter was the primary Christian celebration from earliest times, celebrated each Sunday, and especially on Easter Day.  Holy Week is the rich time of preparation for resurrection joy.

On Palm Sunday, March 20, we will have Eucharist at 8:00 and 10:00, with the Liturgy of the Palms and the Passion Gospel.

Maundy Thursday is March 24.  It's the night commemorating the institution of the Eucharist by Jesus at the Last Supper.  We'll have St. Mark's Table at 6:00 in the undercroft (bring your own place settings and a dish to share), and at 7:00, will move upstairs for Eucharist and the solemn stripping of the altar.  That ceremony reminds us of the abandonment of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane by his friends.

March 25 is Good Friday, the day for remembering the cross and death of Jesus.  At noon, we will offer the Good Friday Liturgy and Stations of the Cross.

The entire week leads up to Easter Day: The Resurrection of our Lord, March 27.  We will have three celebrations of the Eucharist on Easter Day: 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m.

The Church invites us to these holy observances so that we may be renewed in faith, hope and love.

Meeting Church Again for the First Time
Father Mark is offering a Lenten series at 11:30 on Sundays during coffee hour.  He calls it "Why I Joined Up: Meeting Church Again for the First Time."  He's giving his personal view of the Episcopal Church, which he joined intentionally as an adult.  He's covering such topics as our history, our liturgy, our variety, and our authority.

It's an especially relevant series for anyone wishing to deepen understanding of our particular church tradition or even possibly consider Confirmation by the Bishop in June at St. Mark's.  And since we are electing a new bishop later this year in the Diocese of Central New York, the reflections are even more timely.  Join us!

 Spring Ahead, Don't Fall Back!
It's time to change our clocks again.  Daylight Saving Time begins in the wee hours of Sunday, March 13.  So on Saturday, March 12, set your clocks an hour ahead.  Isn't it great when the hours of daylight get longer?

 Creative Writing Group, Continued
We still have four more meetings of the Creative Writing Group, and you're welcome to join in.  We meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in March.  Our leader, Margaret Wedge, is helping us explore our communications styles and writing abilities.  It's never too late!

What's new for the Book Club
For March, you will find the group discussing comedian/actress Amy Poehler's first book - an autobiography entitled "Yes Please", an insightful mix of personal stories, funny bits on love, friendship, and parenthood, and useful, down-to-earth life advice.  Known for her award-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, and as a beloved alumnus of Saturday Night Live, Poehler provides a funny, relatable and often bitingly honest window on the world of comedy and improv.

Christ is risen...and counting on us!
The schedule this year brings together Easter Day, March 27, and our monthly assignment at the Trinity Feeding Canteen.  That's a challenge, but one which will stir the blood of the members of St. Mark's Church, Small But Mighty.  Our church loves to feed people.  Can you honor the risen Christ (who claims to be present in every hungry person) by signing up for the Canteen service on Easter Day?  It means working from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

The Koval Contingent will be ready to lead us.  Pat Henderson and her daughter Kate have already said they are ready to serve.  Consider signing up, making a big difference for the hungry, and delighting the heart of Jesus!

To the Women of St. Mark's
The Women's Retreat at Sky Lake Retreat Center will be held April 30 - May 1.  The topic will be "greening", and the illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen will be our inspiration.  They deal with the greening of self, others, environment, and institutions.  Hildergard was a woman very ahead of her time and she has much to say to us today.  Because there will be a group in Underwood Friday night, the cleaning crew will need time to prepare for us, so our start time on Saturday has been moved to 10:30 a.m.  Departure time on Sunday will be early afternoon.

Please call Mary Taylor to reserve your spot.  Reservations and money must be in the church office no later than Sunday, April 17th.  Please make your check out to me - Judy Kessler.  If they are made out to the church, they take far longer to process.  The fee is the same as last year - $80 for an overnight stay and $30 per day, if you prefer not to stay overnight.  Scholarships are available through Father Mark if it is needed. The fee covers meals, snacks & linens (sheets and towels), vibrant conversation & wonderful cameraderie.  All are welcome to attend this event and we would welcome your presence and participation.

A Thank You From Our Deacon
Deacon Dorothy would like to thank the people of St. Mark's (and also the people of All Saints, Johnson City) for donating clothing and personal items to the jail ministry program.  She took donated items to a Celebrate Recovery meeing recently, a meeting she attends each week.  There are men and women who have been in jail or prison and are now trying to get their lives in better order.  They were so happy to have the clothing, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoos, soaps, and more.  Dorothy is very enthusiastic about this program, in which these persons receive support in faith and in finding work and meaning.  Dorothy says, "You church families are wonderful. I am truly grateful, as are they."
