Hello Firstname

Wednesday 31 May
Our scheduled speaker for next Wednesday has had to pull out at the last minute, so BPS members, Sue O’Connell ARPS, EFIAP/g, DPAGB and Peter Brisley ARPS, DPAGB have stepped in to save the day. They will be presenting their talk called Travels towards the Edge. The talk will combine projected images (Sue) and prints (Peter) and will focus on some of the less frequented destinations, including a World Heritage site deep in the Sahara Desert, a seaside resort full of ghosts in Cambodia, and a couple of active volcanoes in Java.

President's Cup & Garmston Bowl
Advanced Warning - The closing date for the President's Cup and Garmston Bowl competitions is 7 June.
Garmston Bowl: This is a competition, open to all members, that is for a panel of 5 related prints on any subject.
President's Cup: This is a competition open to all members excluding holders of ARPS, EFIAP, DPAGB or EPSA and higher distinctions plus previous winners (of the cup). It will be judged as a panel of 3 related images on any subject. The images will be displayed at the competition individually as well as with the addition of an 'automated' triptych.

From the above, members will realise that this is a competition that excludes the more successful competition entrants, so it is an ideal opportunity for newer or less experienced members to enter a club competition.
A note for those newer to competitions: If you were at last week's Annual Projected Image Competition you will have heard the judge mention "key lines" several times. These are narrow (1 or 2 pixels) lines put around the edge of the image, this helps the viewer, and ultimately the judge, to see where the image stops and the screen starts. When viewed on your monitor at home the edge of the image is obvious, however when projected onto the club screen there are large areas of black surrounding the image. This means that a dark image will "bleed" out into these surrounding black areas and it will no longer be obvious where your image stops and the screen surround starts.

Ross McKelvey Workshop
Following the recent visit to BPS by Ross McKelvey, there is an opportunity for members of BPS to have a workshop on Studio and Natural Lighting at the Catchlight Studio in Belfast run by Ross.

Provisional options and dates are:
There and back in a day
Thursday 21st September leaving Bristol at 07.00hrs and returning at 20.20hrs (Approx cost £205 each)
or
Make it a 2 day trip
Saturday 23rd September leaving Bristol at 07.00hrs and returning Sunday at 16.00hrs (Approx cost £345)

There are no early flights from Bristol on a Friday or evening flights home on a Saturday.

Flights are currently about £55 return BUT hotels in Belfast are in the region of £140 per night. The workshop will cost about £150 per person for a female model rising to £200 per person for an ART Nude one (male or female), depending on final numbers attending.

Please email David Grierson by 7 June if you are interested in going with your preferred option and model choice - mail@dgrierson.co.uk.

Bristol Cars at BPS
For the next month or so, the Bristol Car Owners Heritage Trust will be occupying the first floor at Unit 13. They are in the process of digitising their entire archive and have converted "The Other Room" to an archiving studio, this means that there is a large amount of equipment together with a very large number of files and other archives in the room - so if members need to use the store or studio dressing room area on the first floor, could they please be careful not to disturb anything in "The Other Room".

11 Nov Devizes Camera Club is holding An Evening With Charlie Waite. Charlie is one of the world's leading landscape photographers. The event is at Wiltshire Music Centre at Bradford on Avon. Full details can be found by following this link. I'm told that tickets are selling fast, so you are advised to book now if you are interested.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
