Wednesday 3 April

Next week sees the culmination of the last twelve month's work by Ralph Snook and his Salon team, when we will be shown the 2024 Bristol Salon presentation. Whilst there has been a general downturn in salon entries worldwide, Bristol has bucked the trend and shown a sizable increase in entry numbers and is still the largest international photo exhibition in the UK.
The Salon attracted nearly 7000 images and prints from 53 different countries, with just over 24% being accepted. The show will include all the 258 award winning images along with a selection of the remaining 1400 accepted images - all put to suitable background music by Andrew Marker and his band of willing helpers.

This is an evening not to miss, when you get the chance to see some of the best photographs from across the globe, and which includes quite a few images from BPS members.

DI Group
DI Group Meeting – Clubroom/Zoom – 8 April, 7.30 pm

The last DIG meeting in March was well supported and seven presentations took up the whole evening with a variety of images to inspire us with new ideas.

The next meeting of the DI group is on Monday 8 April in about ten days’ time. It is in the usual format of presentations submitted by members. This is the advance information to invite to all BPS members to share their images in an informal atmosphere. It is also a good opportunity to show your work or to invite comments on your images from your fellow members, especially if you are planning to submit them for competitions or exhibitions. You are also welcome to just sit and watch the proceedings if you wish.

For the submission of the images I would still like to maintain the current system of sending them to me before the meeting. It allows me to prepare the presentation folder in advance for a smooth presentation. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation (about 2 to 20 minutes) to reach me by 6pm-ish  Sunday 7 April. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox link if convenient.

Print Competition Round 4 - Closing Date 10 April
This is advanced warning of the closing date for Round 4 of the 2023-24 Print Competition. It is Wednesday 10 April and the prescribed theme will be Light & Shadow. The judge for this final round of the competition is Martin Cooper LRPS and you can get some idea as to the sort of photography that he likes by looking at his website: www.martincooperphotography.com

It is essential that you supply a digital copy of each print you enter. This should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there is no need to give any other information than your name and the title. You don’t need to add your membership number or level of entry. Please make sure that you upload the digital copies of your prints via this link:
Don't forget: without the upload, your entry won't be judged.

Another Competition To Enter
I have received the following form Cobalt Health UK:

I would be really grateful if you could share the news of our charity photo competition with your members. We have great prizes this year (sessions in a professional bird hide, £300 equipment voucher and more) and the funds raised will help fund Cobalt's Teenage & Young Adult Cancer Care Nurse.

It’s back! Cobalt’s Capture a Moment Photography Competition 2024 open 1 April – 31 July.

Get out and about with your camera and send us your best images.
Twelve winning images will be published in Cobalt’s 2025 calendar and an exhibition will be held in the autumn to showcase the winners and the Judge’s shortlist.

What’s more, proceeds are supporting a specialist cancer nurse for teenager and young adults. It’s just £2 per image to enter and you can enter as many images as you like.

We welcome entries from smartphones or cameras. And this year’s sponsors have donated great prizes including a £300 Wex video voucher, annual membership to The Royal Photographic Society, sessions in a professional bird hide and more.

Midland Salon
A message from our Chairman:

The Midland Salon is now open for entries. They have both print and digital classes, and we offered the opportunity to forward prints from our Bristol Salon to the Midland, thus avoiding the cost of postage.  10 members asked for this to be done, but since then some have withdrawn that request.

I had thought that we would make a group entry and gain a 20% discount, however the Midland do not seem to be offering group entry this time.  I returned the prints to members (or at least put them in the box on the stage) 2 weeks ago, including those requested to be forwarded.

Given there is no group entry then I can/will forward prints as originally planned, of course if you took your prints from the box you will need to get them back to me.
I will be taking the prints to Smethwick on 20 April, everything needs to be with me by 17 April.

Some thoughts:
  • I can send the unmounted prints you entered into the Bristol Salon.
  • You can substitute different prints if you wish, as long as you give me the titles so I can inform the Midland.
  • If you want to mount your prints you can, although if you want them back they need to be in a box, or packaging suitable for posting (and you will need to pay to get them back).
  • If you did not ask your prints to be forwarded, but want to enter the Midland Salon then, if you get the prints to me by 17th I will take them to Smethwick.  I will need the titles beforehand.
  • In all of the above cases you need to enter the Midland in the normal manner and make sure that the images/titles you enter match the prints.
The members whose prints are marked for forwarding are:
Mike Bews
Carol Browne
Ramesh Chauhan
Gerald Gill
David Grierson
Richard Kay
Paul Moran
Derwood Pamphilon

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to Matt de Beger on gaining his Licentiateship Distinction of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS).

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
