Hello Firstname
Wednesday 29 August
There is no meeting at the clubrooms next Wednesday; instead we are getting a bit of fresh air with an outing to the City Docks. According to Mike Bews, we will meet earlier than usual at 7pm and head off towards M Shed. There are lots of boats, buildings, railway stock etc to photograph. For the more energetic there is the prospect of walking further, on to the Bathurst Basin, where there are more boats and buildings, and what to some will be even more important, the prospect of a pint in the Ostrich! For those lacking the energy (or the patience) to reach the Ostrich there are plenty of eateries and watering holes around Prince Street.
To get to the car park, head along Cumberland Rd and turn into Gas Ferry Rd (sign posted SS Great Britain). The car park is on the right before you hit the water. It is a Pay & Display car park but costs a mere £1.10 for 4 hours. See map below.

Members' Evening
Wednesday 22nd saw five members of the club present images; they were Ron Harrison, Mike Bews, Anthea Golding, Mary Pears and Bob Micklethwaite. We were shown images that covered a large range of subjects, from Venice in Lacock to stags in Scotland, flowers in France, boat wrecks in Greece and steam engines in Dorset; all of which made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening and my comment last week about lights having possibly been hidden under bushels was shown to be quite true.
In addition to these brave volunteers, David Southwell also showed the prints from the inaugural Themed Summer Print Competition which had been judged by our own John Chamberlin. The winning picture is shown here along with the overall results.

Always nice to get a Thank You!

As most of you will already know, I chair the Bristol Salon. As such, I receive several thousand emails a year on one subject or another to do with the Salon: in the main main they are pretty mundane but every now and again one stands out and this week one such email, from a young lady in Australia, landed in my In Box and I have reproduced it below. Her award winning image is shown on the left.

2012 Bristol Salon of Photography - Thank you!

Dear Pete,
I just wanted to say a HUGE
"THANK YOU!" to you and to everyone else involved in this year's Salon, as this was (and is) my very first medal in photography, and I just about got run over in the street leaving the post office when I realised that the heavy thing in the package I was opening was an actual medal!! I thought you only received medals for sport!!
I'm delighted, and very grateful, and my dog Banjo (who was featured in the photo) was appropriately rewarded with a big juicy bone.

Thank you again, and please pass my thanks on to all involved.

I look forward to entering next year!!

All the best,

Mieke :)

Kingswood Salver
The Kingswood Salver is an annual inter club competition organised by the WCPF and is for a set of 5 prints by five different photographers on a theme and all taken within the last two years. This year the chosen theme is trotting (harness) racing and several BPS members recently travelled to a race meeting in South Wales with this competition in mind. If you have any images that you think suitable, either from that meeting or any other, please bring them along to the next DI meeting on Monday 10 September when a preliminary selection from projected images can be made, prints can then be made from this selection. Any queries, please contact Pete McCloskey by email
The competition is in November and full details of dates, times venue etc can be found on the WCPF website - www.wcpf.org.uk

WCPF AGM
For those of you that live life in the fast lane, coming up shortly is one of those events not to be missed! The WCPF AGM is being held on Saturday 13 October at Clyst St Mary near Exeter.
The AGM is in the morning and is followed in the afternoon by a talk from Peter Rees FRPS MPAGB EFIAP/p entitled "A Printer's Progress". The morning is free, but the afternoon will cost you £5.50. If you are interested you can find more details by following this link or by contacting Danny Heaton by email.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Hot off the press, Neil McCoubrey has just been awarded his ARPS, well done!

If you want to blow your own trumpet or, dare I say such a thing, blow someone else's trumpet for them, then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include it in the next issue.
