Next Wednesday we are to be treated to an Evening of Prints and Audio Visuals by Sheila Haycox ARPS, MPAGB/AV, EFIAP
Over the last 30 years Sheila has tried many styles of photography and travelled extensively to gain experience and variety and there will be a mixture of subject matter shown in both her prints and audio-visual work.
She is a prolific printer in all types of subject matter ranging from landscape, wildlife, creative, architecture and people and feels it is images that

members would like to see without too much talking,
however she does invite questions from the audience as she feels
interaction between the speaker and members makes for a more interesting
evening. Sheila will also be showing a very mixed bag of Audio Visuals |

and
again feels that an audience would appreciate a variety of work, so she will be
showing photo
harmony, humour, wildlife, fantasy and documentary. She
feels audio
visuals need all the right ingredients to make them work in
that
images, music, voice all come together as a production.

This year's Christmas Social is on 20 December. This year there will be an extra attraction - a sale of photographic equipment. We haven't decided whether it will follow the format of an auction or just a "rummage sale", either way the proceeds will go to a charity yet to be chosen. Members will be asked to donate surplus photo kit for the sale - more details in another issue; in the meantime, make a start by going through all that stuff at the bottom of your wardrobe. |
The next couple of meetings of BTW Group will be on:
4 December in the club studio, when Mark Gilbert will continue his series of lighting presentations, this time concentrating on using flasguns and Speedlights. The workshop will help you to understand how to use these and will cover basics, high speed flash and fill-in flash. Bring your camera and flashgun or Speedlight, the manuals for them and a notebook and pen.
22 January, Pete McCloskey will host an evening based on improving your prints before they are entered into the club's Print Competitions. Each BTW member will be able to have 2/3 prints analysed by Pete, whose constructive comments will help to produce better prints.

Bristol Salon of Photography |
Now is the time send in your entry to the 2018 Bristol Salon and
give yourself the chance of some glory on the international photography
scene.
For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an
international photographic exhibition that has been running since the mid-1940s and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries
from nearly 70 different countries. Entrants may submit up to 16 images across 4
sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel and Nature) which are put before a
panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 30% or so to be accepted. Entry
for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 20 January,
after that you will have to pay the full fee. This might seem like a long way
off, but with Christmas and the New Year coming up you'll soon find that the
closing date is upon you, so beat the rush and get your entry in now!
To help you with your entry there is a small tutorial that can be downloaded
by following this link.
When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system
to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which
you will find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to the payment page
at the end, click ALREADY PAID.

The Fotospeed Academy is holding a workshop at the BPS clubrooms in February to help those who are looking to go for distinctions with the likes of RPS, FIAP, PAGB, BPA and more. The course is being run by ‘The Welsh Dragon’, AKA Margaret Salisbury. Margaret will display examples of successful and also unsuccessful panels, to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. She will offer guidance to participants looking for Distinctions or running Open/International Exhibitions, and use her own experience to encourage and assist you.
She will also explain the up to date criteria for the different associations and John Herlinger from The Fine Art Print room will also be on hand to share his knowledge on the best ways to present your work for panels. Finally, you will be asked to bring your own work with you which will be displayed and reviewed by other members in the class. BPS already runs its own print mentoring evenings, but this could well be a useful addition to those evenings. The dates are 3 & 4 February (two courses). Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website.
