S&B Christmas Party ... Last  2007 Meeting ... New Flickr group ... Calling all Newbies ... Knit-flavoured Comedy

Fat, jolly and dressed-in-bright-red greetings to you

We hope this newsletter finds you well (and not coughing and sneezing with the omnipotent London flu no one can escape), roasting your chestnuts on an open fire, knitting a nose-warmer to keep Jack Frost from nipping, and stitching a stocking for Santa to fill with goodies.

Yes, Christmas is officially carolling on our doorsteps, leaving hoof prints on our rooftops, and making us all feel fairy-lit inside. Dashing through the snow towards us is the S&B Christmas Party and Secret Santa. And judging by some of the hints we’ve been getting from Secret Santa knitters it is going to be a good one (even the simple things will be much appreciated).

Newbies are most welcome at the party, with or without a Secret Santa gift. Join your fellow S&B Londoners to feel a bit festive, and raise a glass to the love of yarn.

We also wanted to let you know that there are only two more S&B London meetings before we break for Christmas. The five weary Stitchettes get to have a well-earned rest, before launching into the New Year with a humongous Calling All Newbies meeting in 2008.

Our last meeting of the year will also be a farewell (or should we say au revoir) to one of our fabulous S&B co-founders Lauren ‘Deadly Knitshade’ O’Farrell who is swanning off to write, knit, and live a fabulous life in the South of France. Lauren will still be contributing to the newsletter from sunny France though (the wonders of the Internet), so expect a few garlic-scented, wine-soaked woolly words from across the channel.

AND you can enjoy a swatch of festive knitted comedy with Girl and Dean too.

Recent meetings have witnessed some frantic Christmas-knit-finishing off, various will-they won’t-theys over what knitting gifts might appear under the tree, and many tales of the sneaky joys of secret foot-measuring for socks.

We flooded the National Theatre bar (they really need more chairs in there), got in the festively fruity mood with our friends at the HOHC Christmas Fayre (and ate too much cake), and warmed our cockles with the sweet, sweet hot choccie at Leon.

Details of the next meeting:

Yes, we've been going on about it for ages and yes - the S&B London's Christmas Party and Secret Santa is finally here!
We are kicking the night off with Secret Santa, so if you have managed to knit a gift then drop it into the ‘giant Christmas stocking of joy' when you arrive. From 7pm you will be able to pull a gift out for your very own. Yay!
If you have not knitted something for Secret Santa then we still welcome you with yarn-covered open arms to come join us; newbies, old hands, and wallflowers alike. After the wrapping paper has been ripped into tiny pieces (and maybe after a spot of knitting), we will be getting into the Christmas spirit(s) by inviting you, your other half, any friends you want to bring along, or your pet (ok, maybe not that last one, unless they are toilet trained) to join us for festive drinks and general merriment until late.

Come one, come all... it's CHRISTMAAAAAASSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

Time: From 6pm
Venue: The Royal George (downstairs)

Stitch and Farewell for another Year (and Goodbye Deadly Knitshade)

Details of the meeting after next:

We at S&BL have been working our woolly butts off over the last year, organising events, raising money, and generally living it up in the world of knit. We have hosted fabulous Knit and Relax areas at Excel and Ally Pally, we dressed London’s lions in 550ft of scarf – raising almost £2,000.00 for Cancer Research, we pulled off the finest Knit Crawl that London town has ever seen, we didn’t drop a stitch while creating the UK S&B Blanket, and were thrilled to meet our mentor Debbie Stoller.

But sadly as the year comes to an end the Stitchettes grow weary, and will be taking a well-earned break over Christmas. Our last meeting of the year will be a chance for you to finish off some Christmas knitting (or start it), and will be the last meeting for a long while for Stitchette Lauren ‘Deadly Knitshade’ O’Farrell.
Time: From 6pm
Venue: The Royal Festival Hall
Address: Southbank Centre
Belvedere Road

  Stitch and Calling all Newbies!

Details of the meeting after that:

We would like to invite knitters old and new to join us in welcoming in the New Year of yarny wonders. We are especially encouraging those of you who have not yet plucked up the courage to come to a meeting before or any of you brand-new knitters (perhaps with a New Year’s resolution to learn an amazing new skill) to join us.

There is no need to be afraid, we don’t bite – just jab a little with our pointy sticks.

Stitch and Sleigh Bells Ring, are You Knitting?

Christmas is a-coming and if you aren’t already desperately trying to knit your way out from under a woolly avalanche of Christmas knits, then why not get your festive sticks and string into some Xmas wonders.

Christmas Tree Ornaments:
What’s cute, festive, woolly, and hangs on trees? No, not a sheep with a potbelly and white beard who thinks he’s a monkey.

Teeny tiny Christmas stocking: Ok, it’s tiny and you won’t fit many presents in it, but it is lovely (and great if you have really tiny feet).

Snow flake: Snow use wishing for a white Christmas, so why not knit one?

Reindeer: After the summer we had it’s hardly likely to snow either. How about knitted rain dear? Sorry, that should be knitted reindeer (these are getting worse aren’t they?).

Personalised 1945 stocking: Make sure Santa knows which one to put the most presents in. Yule be the envy of all the other stocking owners (ok we’ll stop now).

Stitch and Snaps: S&B London Go Flickr

You may have noticed that a few S&B Londoners are a bit snap happy. We’re just a bit in love with what a fabulous sight you all are to the muggles (non-knitters) who are passing by with bemused looks on their faces. Feel free to scowl at us if you’re camera shy, but over the years we’ve captured some gems and recently appointed official S&B Photographer Annisa “Doctor Stitchlove” Chand has come up with the genius idea of creating our own little Flickr group.

Stop by to share your own S&B snaps, comment on an image of yourself unaware and happily stitching away, or to tell us off for not letting you do your hair first. MWA! You all look maaaaaaaaaaarvellous, dahleeeenks!

Stitch and You Can Never Have Too Much Yarn

We hear many things on the woollen grapevine, but this week we have heard a wondrous sound … that of fabulous yarns, patterns and accessories!

Magnificent knitting and crochet brand, Debonnaire, are holding an exclusive ‘open house’ event (in SW6) on Thursday 6th December from 11am to 6pm. If you are after shiny, beautiful products for a knitter’s Christmas gift or just for your own love of the craft then email to RSVP for this very VIKP* event.

Stitch and Spinning Spielberg into Yarn

Ever wondered what to do with all those VHS and TDK tapes that are stacked up all over your abode? Well look no further that Rachel Matthews’ (of Cast Off fame) Analogue Amnesty.

Rachel is asking folk to bring their old tapes along to her latest exhibition where you can tell her how much you loved/hated/cried at those cheesy movies, before she turns them into a knitting masterpiece.
Preserve those memories of the first Take That album or when you were old enough to buy Gremlins 2, as each tape is spun into lovely new yarn.

The exhibition runs from 7th November 07 till 17th January 08 and takes place at Tatty Devine’s Brick Lane shop. It’s totally free to participate and to see the exhibition, but spun yarn prices are on request.

You can drop tapes into either the Tatty Devine store or Rachel’s own haberdashery Prick Your Finger (which is worth a visit even if you have no tapes, as it is soooo cool).

Now where’s that Turner & Hooch Video…

Stitch and Stage Full of Knit-flavoured Comedy

Girl and Dean are S&B London’s favourite comedy duo. We saw them at Ally Pally and S&B UK Day, and their knitting-flavoured madness has us in stitches (sorry). If you missed them before then have no fear.

The lovely Girl and Dean invite you (and your knitting if you would like to give it some culture) to warm the cockles (and whelks) of your internal organs at London’s Pleasance Theatre.

They’ve written a bunch of new material with usual larks and silliness (yay!), and are crafting a special Christmas backdrop of knitting, and cotton wool sculpting (oooo).

They share the show with sharp suit wearing sketch comedy group, the Idiots of Antsand you can catch them on Sunday 16th December at 7pm at the Pleasance Theatre, Carpenters Mews, London, N7

Theatre website Tel: 0207 609 1800 Tickets: £7 (£5 concession)

Break a thread, ladies...

That’s all the cinnamon-scented news we’ve gift-wrapped for you this time, so get back to your Christmas stitching and have a mulled wine for us. See you for a glass of something festive at the Christmas Party, wrap up warm in your woollies, and don’t forget those knitted long-ear warmers for Prancer, Dancer and co.

Stitchette Lauren would just like to say that it’s been a pleasure and a privilege working with my four fabulous fellow Stitchettes and all you other S&B Londoners to make S&B London the group of woolly wonder it has become. Save me a seat and a slice of cake for when I come back. Au revoir, mes amis de tricotage.
Merry Knitting Christmas and Happy New Yarn Year.
