Wednesday 14 June

Next Wednesday our speaker is Grete Howard who will be presenting her talk entitled Wild Brazil.

Grete has always had a passion for travel to unusual and exotic places. Her 2022 trip to Brazil provides ample opportunities for her to engage in the other interest in her life: photography. During the evening, Grete will take you from the stunning waterfalls of Iguacu, jaguar-hunting in the Pantanal, on boat trips in the Amazon, to the birding paradise of Itatiaia National Park
Visit Grete's website to read more about her and her photography.

DI Group - Monday 12 June, 7.30pm
Five presentations last month took up the whole evening, showing a variety of images. It was good to see new and some experimental images which keep members photographic skills fresh.

John Hudson never misses a chance to photograph dance companies at Sadler's Wells theatre under difficult lighting conditions to capture some superb images. His other passion for drone photography took him closer to Bristol to photograph the Victorian viaduct at Pensford from the air. A few of John’s images of a muscular male model taken at a photoshoot showed him proudly displaying his sixpack, enhanced by well positioned lighting and also full figure studies in monochrome.

Derwood Pamphilon’s interest in the difficult genre of figure photography takes him around the country and has won many awards including one silver medal for his image of ‘Xenia’ reproduced here. To make a successful image requires a lot of planning and communication skills on top of the usual technical skills to create an image. His other interest in dance photography is still strong with the images taken in both theatre and studio environments.

David Alderson was somewhere in Somerset at a medieval period re-enactment. His images included some action shots of jousting and hand to hand fighting with swords, hopefully without bloodshed. I am sure some of those pictures taken at the re-enactment have a great potential for creative work and we may well see them in future club competitions.

The next DI group meeting is on Monday 12 June. The meeting is open to all BPS members. This is a gentle reminder to all members that it is an ideal opportunity to share your images with fellow members. It’s an opportunity to get a second opinion at the DI meeting from your fellow members or you might just enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere. You are free to ask questions on digital imaging.

When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish  Sunday 14 May. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Competition News - Closing Dates Next Wednesday
President's Cup and Garmston Bowl
Next Wednesday, 14 June, is the closing date for these two panel competitions. You can find details and rules in the Competitions section of the BPS website but the following are key points to bear in mind:

The President’s Cup Projected Digital Image Competition
This is open to all members, excluding holders of ARPS, EFIAP, DPAGB, EPSA and higher distinctions. Also winners of the cup in the last three years are excluded. It will be judged as a panel of 3 related PDIs on any subject. The images will be displayed at the competition individually as well as with the addition of an ‘automated’ triptych.  Individual image filenames must be submitted in the usual format even though the competition is open to all class levels. You may give the overall panel a title in the email text when submitting the images.

The Garmston Bowl Print Competition
This is open to all members and is for a panel of 5 related prints on any subject. The entry will be judged as a panel of five. Each print should bear the overall panel title and be numbered 1-5 as viewed from left to right. You can download print labels from the BPS website's Competitions Closing Dates section.

The competitions will be held together on 5 July, judged by Sue O'Connell and Peter Brisley.
