Hello --
Welcome to Issue #237 of the Social Work E-News! Thank you for subscribing to receive this email newsletter, which is brought to you by the publisher of The New Social Worker magazine, SocialWorker.com, SocialWorkJobBank.com, and other social work publications.
As the academic year is starting soon or may have already started in your area, there is still much uncertainty for students and faculty at all levels. Whether you are a social work student, faculty member, school social worker, or a parent of a student, I wish you well in the coming school year. And I welcome all new social work students!
I welcome short articles on COVID-19 and the new school year, especially if you have tips for other social workers/students.
Right now, I am also looking for a great cover photo for our Fall issue! These are usually group photos of social workers or social work students. For example, a timely photo might be a group of social workers wearing masks and physically distanced. Photos showing social workers wearing social work-related t-shirts are always a good choice, as well. Be creative!
Our Fall issue will be out in September. Our Spring/Summer issue focuses on the 2020 BSW and MSW graduates, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic as it relates to social work and social workers. Congratulations to all new social work grads, and welcome to the profession. We need you and are excited about your future in the profession!
Our Spring/Summer issue is out NOW! Read

Call for Abstracts
Social Work, White Supremacy, and Racial Justice: Reckoning
with Our History, Interrogating our Present, and Re-Imagining Our Future
Due date: September 1, 2020
The social work profession
simultaneously practices within racist systems and works to dismantle
them. In the wake of a fervent #BlackLivesMatter movement and persistent
racial disparities in key social welfare institutions, such paradoxes
have come to the forefront of discussion in academic and practice
circles. This unique moment presents an opportunity to interrogate our
profession’s relationship to White supremacy and racial justice in order
to reimagine an anti-racist future.
As such, a call for abstracts has been issued for a series of virtual
symposia that will address these themes. It is the organizers' intention that papers
based on symposia presentations will be published in an edited volume.
Reprints of papers will not be accepted.
See the full Call for Abstracts at:
Social Work Leadership Roundtable Town Hall on Racial Equity
Friday, August 14, 2020, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Eastern
A panel discussion of what social work organizations are doing to advance anti-racism will be held THIS FRIDAY, August 14, 2020, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Eastern on Facebook Live. The town hall will take place at Facebook.com/naswsocialworkers
Two panels will include representatives from leading social work organizations, including the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW), Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD), Society for Social Work and Research, American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare, National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work, and Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work.
Write for THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER
I am seeking a limited number of articles for THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER website and magazine. Is there an issue that you are passionate about that corresponds with an upcoming “awareness” month, week, or day; holiday; or time of year/season? Or an issue you have experienced as a social worker or social work student that you would like to share with peers? These are good places to start to identify a topic for a timely article for our website.
For the magazine, we are seeking articles on social work career development, field placement issues, and fields of practice.
Our style is conversational and educational, and web articles typically run 500-750 words. Feature articles typically run 1,250-1,500 words. We want positive articles that social workers can use to help them advance in their careers.
I also welcome submissions of poetry, photographs, illustrations, artwork, videos, audio, and other creative work depicting social work and related topics.
Submit articles to Linda Grobman with a subject line that says “Submission—(insert title or topic of submission).” Attach your submission as a Word file. Please include in this file: title of submission, your name as you want it to appear with your article, body of your submission, a brief bio about yourself. I will then review your submission and let you know if I need anything else and/or whether it is accepted for publication.
Please email Linda Grobman with ideas for longer (1,250-1,500 words) "feature articles" for THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER magazine.
Thank you!
