A.B.C 2012 Apprenticeship Program Application Extension
|
This year, A.B.C is pleased to offer a beekeeping apprecticeship program to local urban bee-lovers. A.B.C currently has 10 colonies all over Calgary and is looking to consolidate the colonies to 2 ‘locations’. Inglewood and a rural location near Springbank. A.B.C is looking to expand the 10 colonies to 22 colonies by the end of 2012. Learn how to make splits, prepare for queen rearing, and prepare for winter.
Benefits & Responsibilities: A.B.C’s apprenticeship program is structured to give you all the first-hand knowledge you need to start a beehive of your own on your roof, community garden, or backyard. We will provide teams of two to three apprentices with several beehives, beekeeping equipment, basic safety gear, and close guidance through a season of hive management in a small group setting. Our goal is to give you the training you need to apply your knowledge independently by the end of the season, and leave prepared to be a mentor to new beekeepers next year. Click here to read more!

Queen Rearing Workshop 2012
Bill Stagg comes to YYC in July!
|
Did you know? Over 85% of Canada’s honey surplus is created in Alberta, and that Canada is the 5th largest honey producer in the world? And did you also know that BC produced 20,000 nucs last year and has a market for 10x that amount in the local economy by sending bees to Alberta? And also that BC produced 30,000 queens last year and the market offers 10x that amount through Alberta and BC local sales? And did you know that currently 99% of imported colonies coming across Albertas boarders are from either NZ or Australia? So…. why should you become a self-sufficient beekeeper? Well, not only is there a market for it, it is a rare commodity in the Alberta community of beekeepers!
Come and take the Queen Rearing Workshop taught by Bill Stagg on July 7th and 8th. Bills a BC Provincial Hive inspector, seller of nucs and queens at www.sweetacreapiaries.ca in Tappen BC, the heart of the Shuswap. Here is the course schedule!

Come and see the bees!
|
As you may know, the honeybees from the Community Hive Collab. Purchase come in May 13th, 2012. So, about a month after their arrival, I am offering a chance to see how they are doing! OnJune 16th, 2012 from 12-4pm, I (Eliese Watson) and A.B.C will be offering open house to come and view the bees, ask questions, and maybe do some hive manipulations with both Top Bar and Langstroth hives, like adding supers, maybe making a split, or observing queen cells. A.B.C has extra hats and veils, so come out and see the bees fly around and learn a bit more about how to keep bees in the city of Calgary!! Register here

Bill Stagg and his wife Larissa have moved from the town of Sorrento to a beautiful farm of their own in near by Tappen BC, in the heart of the Shuswap, last year. Bill Stagg is the owner of Sweetacre Apiaries and a hive inspector for the province of British Columbia. But, he is also a proud father of 2 (soon to be 3) and a passionate educator and excellent friend. This move has not only offered Bill more room for his expanding family, but it also allows for Bill to move forward with his goals in his professional career as a phenomial advocate for honeybees. This year Bill is not only opening up the gates of his farm yard to fellow beekeepers, he is also offering you a plate at his dinner table, a task in his honeyhouse, and a seat in his truck. Bill is offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to live the life of a careered beekeeper. Five days of beekeeping in the Shuswap – could there be anything sweeter ? (Sorry for the pun!)
During these five days, the farm will be worked by a rotating crew.
