Skis. From the series: Escamp, The Hague. December 2011
Assigned by Carrie Zwarts and Sybren Kuiper for Vestia

Dear ,

Last year much has happened, my latest project Collected Memory was on display for the first time, in the beautiful environment of De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal in Middelburg.

Also my book MADE IN CHINA was issued and I held nine book presentations. The last one of this year was at the photobook marathon last weekend at Huis Marseille in Amsterdam.

Underneath an overview of 2011.

Happy holidays and a good 2012!

Best wishes, Johan Nieuwenhuize

Profile Pictures in Yvi Magazine

Van Kranendonk Gallery showed my new series Profile Pictures at Art Rotterdam and Art Amsterdam this year. More the twenty works were sold to different corporate and private collections.

This week the series was published in the internationally distributed Yvi magazine, together
with the work of -among others- Thorsten Brinkmann, Charles Fregér and Nienke Klunder.

Collected Memory

The project Collected Memory was on display in a the museum like environment of De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal in Middelburg. The exhibition On Time In Place was a collaboration with artist Esther Kokmeijer. Because her work has time and place as a starting point as well, this was a good combination.

For her project Esther traveled to the polar cirkel in Iceland to create work during the soltice, the day the sun doesn't rise or set, respectively on December 21st and June 21st.

For my own series Collected Memory I travel to locations where important events from the collective memory took place. On the exact moment of the event, but years later, I take pictures of the sky. With these pictures I create a sculptural installation.

This project is ongoing and I am working on plans to travel to new locations next year.
