Johan Andersson on Sky Art's 'Art of Survival' Starting Thursday 21st July

A Regular Exhibitor with Art Below, Johan Andersson is one of four artists to feature on this year's 'Art of Survival' on Sky.

The 4 artists were dropped in Athens, Greece with no money, no credit cards and only their
talent to get them back home for a prestigious appearance at the Edinburgh Festival.

By painting, performing and by virtue of bare-faced cheek, the four artistic
adventurers have just their art and inspiration to survive on as they make their way
across Europe, with the winning team being the pair that has made the most money
throughout the trip.

Art Below are running a series of special edition prints of Johan Andersson's paintings.

The following images are available to buy as A2 Lambda Prints, Signed, Edition of 750
£120.00 (Inclusive of VAT, unframed)

WHAT'S ON!

One more for the Road!

18th July – 12th August

The title of the show, the colloquial exhortation heard at the conclusion of many an evening spent within the environs of Soho, is an apt one; the four artists are all associated with and draw their influences from that social vortex located within the square mile or so bounded by Oxford Street ,Charring Cross Road, Regent Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. Their work reflects the attractions, fascinations (and revulsions ) of this infamous locale as well as the wider concerns of the artist and the city. A city replete with inspiration and dissolution in equal measure.

The exhibition is comprised of four different perspectives, employing photography, painting and sculpture and is mostly of previously unseen work. The show is curated by Carlo Zenone.

Sunday Sound Waves Launch
with Janek Schaefer

24 July / From Music To Sound (and back again)
An evening with Janek Schaefer
6 - 9 pm

Music (as a form of expression) is a perfect symbiotic model of unity; matter, form and content are one. Music allows the individual to experience deep and intense emotions. Sound is a 'unifying' sense — creating an immediacy of effect.

From Music To Sound (and back again) is an evening with the renowned sound artist, musician, and composer Janek Schaefer - a journey beginning with his early thoughts studying architecture to the relationship between sound and our sense of space and place.

During the evening there will be an artist discussion, film screenings and a live interactive performance of his new work, Local Radio Orchestra, which consists of 12 portable radios and 24 FM transmitters that saturate the radio dial and allows you to tune out and tune in to the custom composition broadcasts. This idea is combined with the engagement of the audience who are invited to participate to create a shuffling and shifting orchestra - a community radio station!

The event also serves as a launch night of the Sunday Sound Waves series alongside Schaefer’s retrospective catalogue and the release of his two new album editions.

Sunday Sound Waves is guest curated by Alexa Kusber.

About Sunday Sound Waves:
Throughout six weeks in July and August at GALERIE8, Sunday Sound Waves will aim to critically engage with the surrounding environment through sound, and to explore the influences it has on new ways of making and experiencing visual forms.

The series includes a broad range of artists and creators that are increasingly blurring genre lines and sensibilities in the realms of sound and the visual. Participating artists will do this by recording the sounds of architectural spaces, re-inventing musical instruments, using sound as a sculptural material, or working with music and cinematography.

‘Live on Stage: Rock Photography from Dylan to Dubstep’

An exhibition by Ellen Doherty and Keith Baugh
at the West Bank Gallery, LondonAugust 2011

Photographers Ellen Doherty and Keith Baugh link up to exhibit an eclectic collection of images that capture the passion and soul of the musician in performance. Spanning four decades and featuring over 60 artists as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Bob Dylan, PJ Harvey, MF DOOM, Mos Def and Amazulu, this stunning visual treat leads you straight to the front at the ultimate festival of music.

The exhibition debuts at the London West Bank Gallery,133-137 Westbourne Grove, London W11, with a private view on the 11th August 2011, and then runs for two weeks until the 26th, ending with a closing party and carnival warm-up. The photographers are planning to tour the show internationally throughout the rest of the year.

Keith and Ellen first met 10 years ago when Keith was teaching art at the school Ellen attended. They reconnected in 2010 when Keith released his highly acclaimed photography book, ‘Early New York Subway Graffiti 1973 – 1975’. Realising a shared love of music and live photography, they planted the seed of an idea of working together to exhibit their work: a combined four decade insight into the world of the rock music photographer, capturing passionate performances, icons of the future, encapsulating moments of time and music.

The exhibition displays photographs created on film and digital mediums, and features never before seen images of Bob Marley performing to school children in Peckham at the invitation of Keith in 1972. Also featured are a series of rare photographs of Bob Dylan dating from the 1970s.

Much of Ellen’s work focuses on the underground electronic artists currently touring, and includes a selection of hip-hop icons such as KRS-One, Mos Def and Kurtis Blow. She shoots in small venues and huge stages alike, and captures stars on the rise as well as established artists.

The artists passionately believe that both music and art should be accessible to all, and have designed the show to feature highly affordable works to give everyone the opportunity to take home iconic photographic prints of their favourite musician.

‘Live on Stage: From Dylan to Dubstep’is an insight into the excitement of shooting from the press pit - the star in the spotlight and the roar of the crowd. It is a visual journey from the days of Dylan going electric, to the soundsystem culture feeding of Marley’s dubplates that in turn lead to the evolution of bass culture and dubstep movement of the 2000s.

2 photographers, 40 years, 60 musicians, countless genres of music.
