For those of you who don't know Leigh, I can promise you that he's a lot more cheerful than the mug shot he sent me portrays!
|
|
Next Wednesday we see the return of an old favourite of BPS, namely Leigh Preston FRPS.
Leigh’s photography is mainly thematic, often using dramatic lighting in wilderness situations, or monochrome in the man-made landscape. Much of his work is about the Urban landscape, depicting a changing industrial landscape or portfolio work in far-flung locations. Over the past 40 years he has travelled in the USA to make images on the empty Prairies or in deserts, to Greenland, Iceland, Norway, the Baltic, the mountainous areas of the UK to find winter landscapes or the exact opposite in Australia.

Trips to Cuba, India and Georgia, have given opportunities with a reportage style of portraiture. To avoid being forever known as 'Mills & Gloom’, recently work has been about street characters, humour or aspects of absurdity, making images at rock concerts and tackling architectural abstracts. He prefers to work alone, influenced by the environment he grew up with and the photography of Bill Brandt, John Gray, Michael Kenna and the artists L.S.Lowry and Atkinson Grimshaw. Lyricism and narrative have become increasingly important in the documentary work he is now producing, linking influences such as J.B. Priestly, Beryl Bainbridge alongside Bob Dylan and Roger Waters.
Leigh has produced four books of his pictures – ‘Shadows of Change’, ‘Five Essays’, ‘Editions' and very recently ‘Liverpool, a place apart' which depict the various aspects of his photography as outlined above. He is a Fellow of the RPS, and holds FIAP and PAGB distinctions, has taught photography for Gloucester and Cheltenham colleges, for Jessops, Permajet and on landscape workshops.

Possible Traffic Delays Next Wednesday
|
If you travel through north Bristol to get to club, it might be worth setting off a bit earlier next Wednesday, or choosing a different route, as Bristol Rovers are hosting EFL Championship side Norwich City in an FA Cup replay - so traffic may be a bit thicker than normal.

When Covid struck, our scheduled programme was thrown into total disarray and the Programme Secretary was forced, very quickly, to come up with a new "Zoom" alternative. This meant the death of our printed annual handbook.
Several members have mentioned that a printed version would be useful, and as Jay has now completed a programme to take us up to the end of August, we have had a word with Matt who has now produced a downloadable A4 pdf. If you would like a copy, just follow this link, which will take you to the programme where you can download it.

WCPF Inter-Club Championship - Support Your Club!
|
This event will be showing the best images from the region, with as many prints as possible being on display at the venue. This is always a popular event, why not come along and support BPS and take the opportunity to catch up with friends and photographers from other clubs.
The Championship consists of two competitions: one for Digital Images (previously DPIC) and one for Prints (previously the Inter-Club Print). Each competition within the Championship is judged separately and has its own awards. The two competitions will be run as a combined event, judged on the same day using the same judges. The top clubs in each competition will go forward to represent WCPF in the PAGB national inter-club championships later in the year.
