Hello Firstname

Wednesday 23 October

Wednesday 23 October we welcome Leigh Woolford AWPF EFIAP DPAGB BPE3* Hon FWPF, who will be presenting his talk - A Glimpse of Iceland The talk is being specially put together for Bristol PS and is based on eight journeys Leigh has made to that cold, hot, beautiful, ugly island between 2011 and 2019. (He’ll be completing his 2019 trip just two weeks before his visit to BPS).

The first half of the evening will be a PDI talk illustrating many of Leigh’s favourite locations from all corners of the country complete with maps, travel

tips, information and of course lots of photos. We’ll visit mountains, rivers, waterfalls, beaches, glaciers, ice beaches, ice lagoons, lakes and everything else in between.

The second half will feature a selection of his favourite competition prints both colour and monochrome.

Here are a couple of images from the talk. To see more of Leigh's images and read more about him, why not visit his website at leighwoolfordphotography.weebly.com

We're Having a Bit of a Clear Out
I've been having a bit of a clear out of old Salon stuff. We seem to have accumulated a large number of clear (but printed with UKMail logos) big plastic sacks. These are 80cm wide x 100cm tall and are virtually indestructible. These are ideal for bagging up stuff to take to the tip, or a myriad of other storage or bagging jobs. If you'd like some, I'll have them at club next Wednesday, and they're FREE!

WEX/Calumet Workshop At Unit 13
How to use three point-lighting | Flash photography
Tuesday 15 October, 10:00am - 1:00pm. at BPS, Unit 13 - Cost £15
Learn the basics of studio lighting for photographers getting started or wanting to refresh how to use one to three-point lighting setups with Hannah Rooke.
Itinerary:
  • Basic camera settings
  • One-point light setups
  • Three-point light setups
  • Differences between hard and soft light
  • Controlling and manipulating lights with modifiers
  • Differences between flash and constant
Lighting can be daunting to most photographers at any level. A relatively simple approach and setup can create a natural look. Learning to shape and modify light can change the mood of an image and open up new possibilities of creativity, even with minimal understanding of the systems.
We will also look at flash lighting setups and the application and benefits of this.
This workshop is for those who have a basic understanding of manual controls of a camera and would like to add the use of lighting to their photographic arsenal.
You will need:
  • Your DSLR/mirrorless camera and lens
  • Spare battery
  • Memory card
To book tickets, click here.

Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm
Wild Arena | Macro Moth photography - £30

These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography. During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close-up. Topics covered will include:
  • The choice & use of macro lenses
  • Keeping things in focus
  • The creative use of depth-of-field
  • Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to photographers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.

Lacock Abbey Until 3 November Photography exhibition at the Fox Talbot Museum by Maggie Taylor
Artist Maggie Taylor returns to Lacock this summer with Through the Looking Glass. Using her point and click camera, flatbed scanners and Photoshop, she creates digital art that transports viewers into dreamlike worlds. Inspired in part by Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland, Taylor’s use of antique nineteenth-century photographic sources including anonymous daguerreotypes and tintypes imbues her imagery with a Victorian character appropriate to the setting of Carroll’s narrative. Discover links to Lacock Abbey through these images, on display in our Photographic gallery - free admission to the exhibition. For more details of the exhibition and Lacock, follow this link. (I've seen this exhibition and she almost manages to "out-Barry" Barry! - Ed)

Competitions to Enter
Architectural Photographer of the Year - Organised by The Museum of Bath Architecture and Bath Preservation Trust, this year’s competition will have three categories with two new themed categories:
Architecture of Entertainment
From ancient amphitheatres to then multiplex cinema architects have been designing entertainment spaces for thousands of years. This year we are setting a challenge for photographers to capture images of architecture, interior or exterior, that have an entertainment theme, be it the Sydney Opera House or the Theatre Royal.
Bath: After the Georgians
Most people who come to visit Bath are here to see the Georgian city. However, as the city has expanded and developed over the years, so too has its architecture. Even within the centre you can find the odd 1960’s brutalist building and as you travel further out of the centre great examples of Victorian and Edwardian styles can be found. What can you find? What buildings old or new catch your eye?
Junior architectural photographer of the year
Open to photographers under the age of 19. We want to see what architecture inspires you. What do you prefer old buildings or ultra-modern? What’s the coolest building you’ve seen?

Closing date: 30 November
