Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 2 September
Next Wednesday sees the start of the new 2020/2021 BPS year which, as is tradition, kicks off with the Chairman's Evening. Ralph Snook ARPS DPAGB EFIAP/b has promised us an evening to remember and says of his talk:

I spent some time thinking about content for the evening and in the end decided that I would go for Nostalgia in the first section, and some images from the States in the second.
The first half recounts a trip/expedition to a remote part of Zambia a long time ago that was not without it’s amusing and unexpected content. This was one of the trips that contributed to a major change in direction for Margaret and me but more of that …..

After the break, a more recent series of trips to Yellowstone (hot and cold) and then Florida, don’t worry it’s not all wildlife and there may even be one or two images with people in!

I’m going to enjoy the memories, I hope you will too, see you there.

Projected Image Competition
Next Wednesday, 2 September, is the closing date for Round 1 of the 2020/21 Projected Image Competition, which is Wednesday, 2 September. The subject for the Prescribed Subject for the Advanced section is "Creative", which for this round is intended to give a showcase to members who were unable to enter the cancelled Creative competition earlier in the Summer. Images submitted to this round will, according to the rules, also be eligible for the 2020-21 Creative competition, which we intend to run.
Images as usual, to Ken Clarke at competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk, no later than Wednesday, 1 September.

If you are in doubt about any of the rules relating to the competition, please follow this link

400 Issues - Time to Celebrate!
I couldn't let the fact that this is Issue 400 of BPS in Focus go without marking the occasion somehow. I wasn't sure how to do this, but then I had one of those Eureka moments - combine my daily exercise routine with a bit of celebrating, so below I'm sharing what has now become my daily exercise since Joe Wicks has disappeared from our TV screens

PSA - Photo Travel Definitions
You might recall, a couple of weeks ago I published the latest incarnation of the PSA Photo Travel definitions, which at first glance seemed to be a bit Draconian. The two images below go some way to illustrating why such rule changes were long overdue. The first shows an image, typical of the Photo Travel images that we receive in the Bristol Salon and that you see in many other salons and looks like a good Photo Travel shot, showing the people in their environment and following the PSA definition to the letter, :

What is shown below, is the true story, a highly contrived image set up for a vast collection of photographers, all taking the same "not quite so unique" shot:

IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS

In preparation for the annual report by the Company Secretary for presentation to the auditors, would you please let Carol know of any changes in your distinctions (shown at the head of this newsletter) by emailing her at membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

20th FIAP Nature Biennial 2020
The 20th FIAP Nature Biennial 2020 competition was held recently in Russia. This was contested by 33 different countries and images from two BPS members, Mary & Graham Pears, were among the 20 photographers who had images selected to represent Great Britain and I'm sure that you'll congratulate both for a wonderful achievement. Their two images helped Team GB to come 2nd to Italy. Although Team GB gained more points than Italy (248 to 239), Italy were placed 1st - whilst the GB submission of 20 images actually scored highest, Italy rated more highly for “Coherence” (don't ask me!) giving them sufficient points to pip team GB by one point overall.

So a big pat on the back is due to both Mary and Graham - well done.

Free Nikon Webcam Software
With more and more people using cameras to carry out work meetings via Zoom or Skype, Nikon is the latest big maker to bring out webcam software. The company's Webcam Utility software is compatible with selected DSLRs and the Z-series mirrorless camera range, and although it is free, the Beta download is only available for Windows PCs. Once installed on your PC, connect your camera via a USB lead and you should get far better picture quality than you would from a bog-standard webcam built into your screen. You can download the programme by following this link.

Thanks to Pete McCloskey for this.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
If you'd like to blow your own trumpet via the newsletter, why not drop me a line (bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk) and I'll include it here.

And Finally!
There wasn't exactly a flood of entries to this light-hearted caption competition, with most of the entries leaning towards a political angle. However, Ashwin Chauhan managed to come up with one that almost hinted at a knowledge of photography and therefore takes the prize!
