Arizona State Senator Who Is Under Investigation Is Sharing Bad Legal Advice On Felonious Ballot Harvesting That Could Land Several Into Trouble

Phoenix, AZ -- Somos Independents is a Mexican-American woman-led organization that focuses on signaling to key swing independent voters towards moderate / centrist views.  We do not endorse fraud and corrupt behavior from our elected public officials.  We are learning State Sen. Quezada is writing  falsehoods and/or sharing wrong information about the new law HB2023 Governor Doug Ducey signed that could land undocumented immigrants into serious trouble or Chicanos and Latinos who are not aware of the new campaign rules effective August 1, 2016.  Arizona State Senator Martin Quezada is currently under investigation for violating open meeting law.  Larry Nolen, filed a complaint against the state senator with the Attorney General's office, and  has been  a teacher in an Arizona school district for over 25 years and a member of the teacher's association for at least 15 years.  He was also a past President of Pendergast Federation of School Employees for 8 years, but also served as Vice President of the federation for 4 years.

As an immigration rights advocacy organization, we have seen the undocumented immigrants get taken advantage of and we do not want anyone to risk their lives with having a felony on their record in light of the new laws taking place on August 1, 2016.   We also do not want to see the Chicano and Latino community get misinformed on the campaign rules and risk themselves with a felony record and who may not know about the new rules going into place.

Rosa Cantu, candidate for Legislative District 29 House of Representatives said:

"As leaders we have the responsibility to inform our community not to get in trouble or violate laws."

However, yesterday State Senator Quezada shared a tweet by Josh Zaragoza below:

State Senator Quezada's retweeting bad legal advice will not prevent our community from getting into trouble with felonies as records.  Our organization takes felonies seriously, and though we believe it is extreme for a person to get a felony for ballot harvesting, it is a law that will be enforced if persons are caught collecting ballots when reported to the Attorney General's office.  The goal here is for raza in our community to know about the new law in place and measures to avoid getting charged with a felony.

Instead of warning the community that they could get a felony for ballot harvesting, the State Senator is perverting the truth and sharing false information on twitter that could get a lot of people into trouble. Quezada is spreading more falsehoods about his opponent, Lydia Hernandez, who wants to protect the community from getting a felony on their records.

This is not the first time Quezada has turned to look the other way when it comes to felonies.

Quezada helped his cohort Arizona State Representative Ceci Velasquez get elected into office and wanted her re-elected in 2016 even though he knew of the felony welfare fraud charges filed against her before the public knew.  According to the Yellow Sheet Report provided by the Arizona Capitol Reports LLC, Quezada defended Velasquez when she was charged with stealing from the welfare purse.  Our organization will not defend any elected official for stealing from welfare, and we have asked for Velasquez to resign and stop wasting more tax payer money because she is still on the Capitol payroll.

On August 3, 2016, at approximately 8:08 pm, Quezada wrote:

Facts are stubborn things, and it is important for Independent voters and Democrats in LD 29 to know that Lydia did not vote in support of HB2023.  Lydia Hernandez has a responsibility to warn voters in her district how to prevent from getting a felony on their records.   Since Sen. Quezada is retweeting falsehoods from Josh Zaragoza, we urge him to contact Secretary Reagan's office at (602)542-4285 before he reshares information that could land many of our people into a lot of trouble.  Quezada was not there to legally defend his cohort Velasquez on her welfare fraud charges, and we are warning the community that he will not be there either to  defend Hispanics/Latinos who are charged with felonies in light of the Ballot Harvesting laws that are taking effect as of August 1, 2016.
