The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
April 2013
From the Rector...
When is a day not a day?
When we are talking about Easter!  Easter is not a day, but a season.  Easter season is the Great Fifty Days starting with Easter Day.  It is the biggest, best and brightest season of the church year.  The 40 days of Lent are far less important than the Great Fifty Days of Easter.  Why?  Because Christ is risen!
The joy of the resurrection changes everything.  It blows the lid off every tomb ever built.  It is God's "Yes" to the world!
So let's celebrate.  Tell jokes... eat well... give some money away with joy... enjoy the spring... and, above all, honor the risen Christ in your heart and actions.
And come celebrate Easter with us for weeks to come as we break the Bread and share the Cup!
                                                                           Father  Mark
Bishop Skip Adams Coming to St. Mark's
Sunday, April 7, the Sunday after Easter, will be extra special because our bishop is coming to be with us.  The Rt. Rev. Gladstone B. Adams III, affectionately known as "Skip," will preach and preside at both 8:00 and 10:00.  Arabella Laine is scheduled to be baptized at 8:00 on that day as well.
Bishop Skip's visitations are always a great experience.  He loves the congregations of our diocese, and has always been fond of St. Mark's in Chenango Bridge.  The Rector will tell you that we have a bishop who is a people person, and you will find him easy to talk to.  He's the first one to arrive at church and the last to leave.  Don't miss our time together!
St. Mark's Hosts 2013 District Confirmation Service
Bishop Adams will be in Chenango Bridge on Sunday, April 7, and at 3:00 in the afternoon, we will host a confirmation service for the Binghamton District of the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York.
Seven people from St. Mark's are being confirmed or received, with the laying on of hands of the bishop: Mary-Emma McRae, Sandy Zanker-Nichols, Gary Henderson, Patricia Henderson, Bill Henderson, Mike Henderson, and Kate Henderson.  Some neighbors from Christ Church and Trinity Church in Binghamton will be comfirmed or received as well.  We'll be having a reception downstairs after the service.
Please come to support and celebrate with these individuals making a public affirmation of faith and a commitment to the Episcopal Church in the presence of our Bishop.
Come to St. Mark's Table
We will eat together, sing together, and celebrate Eucharist together in an informal setting.  St. Mark's Table will be on Tuesday, April 16, at 6:00 p.m. in the undercroft.  Bring your own place setting and a dish to pass.  We always celebrate, but have even more reason in April, since we will be in the Great Fifty Days of Easter!  Alleluia!
A Cool Question
The Rector and the Vestry are trying to figure out a way to make the balcony cooler for our organist and choir during the hot weather.  Although we have air conditioning in the church, you may remember from your science classes that warm air rises.  Even with our a/c, the balcony is too hot on summer Sundays!
One possibility we are exploring is the use of an "air cooler," an appliance similar to an air conditioner.  It is portable and does not need a connection to the wall for external venting.  Does anyone have such a unit that we might borrow in an experiment to test its effectiveness in our balcony?  Please talk to the Rector if you can help.
 Youth Group Lock-in May 10
We want to get the word out early...and we hope families of our teens will mark the calendar for Friday, May 10.  Father Mark, Eric and Sabrina Laine will host an overnight at the church for our kids in grades 7-12.  The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 8:30 a.m.  Everyone is asked to bring a sleeping bag, pillow and sleepwear, toiletries, and a snack to share.  We always have a good time!
Our Ramp Builders Will Be Honored
Each year, the "Faith in Action Volunteers" program of the Broome County Council of Churches has a breakfast honoring some stellar people of faith.  This year, the youth and adults of St. Mark's who have been working for four summers building wheelchair ramps for disabled people who cannot afford them will be honored, along with others.
This breakfast will be on Thursday, May 2, from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at the Binghamton Riverwalk Hotel.  Tickets cost $35 per person.
Father Mark will introduce Dan Gridley, who will represent our teens and adults who have worked on this project; Dan will be giving a 5-minute speech.  Dan is representing the dozens of teens and the 5 adults who have worked on these ramps since 2009.
Talk to Father Mark if you would like to attend!
The Book Club's Pick of the Month
In April the group will be reading ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel Garcia Marquez for discussion at our May meeting.  This classic tale traces the rise and fall of a mythical city in South America through the history of one family.  It is an inventive, amusing, disturbing tale considered a masterpiece in the art of fiction.

Church School
If you were in church at the 10 a.m. service on Palm Sunday you got to see the Prayer Beads that the children created during the kids part of Father Mark's Lenten program.  They are truly originals!  And the children loved working with the polymer clay.
Fourth through Sixth graders, keep your eyes open for information regarding an upcoming Sleepover sometime this Spring.
