2 Timothy 3:14-15 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

CONTINUE IN THE SCRIPTURES

Once upon a time there was a New England school teacher who quizzed a group of college-bound high school seniors on the Bible. The quiz preceded a "Bible as Literature" class which he planned to teach at a local high school the following year. He got some "off the wall" answers from his students from this quiz. Among the most usual were: "Sodom and Gomorrah were lovers." "Eve was created from an apple." "Jesus was baptized by Moses." The answer that took the misinformation prize was given by a young man who was academically in the top 5% of his graduating class. To the quiz question "What was Golgotha?" he responded: "It's the name of the giant who slew the apostle David."

The lack of knowledge in regard to the Bible (including some of its basic truths) is widespread in our world. Surveys invariably reveal that even many church people are ignorant of the ABC's of the Christian faith or, if they do know them, they don't know how to apply them in their daily walk of life.

How important it is for us to be diligent students of the Scriptures so that the Spirit of God may use the Scriptures to increase our understanding of the Bible's teachings, fortify our faith in Jesus, and bless us with wisdom to apply its truths to His glory in our daily walk of life. How beautiful is the prayer (let's carry it in our hearts):

Oh, may these heavenly pages be My ever dear delight;
And still new beauties may I see And still increasing light!

Divine Instructor, gracious Lord, Be Thou forever near;
Teach me to love Thy sacred Word And view my Savior here.
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 284:5-6)
