Kara Walker: Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated)
Opens March 1
Frick Art Museum
In this striking exhibition of work, Kara Walker overlays silkscreen figures in solid black silhouette over enlarged illustrations from Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War published in 1866. In doing so, Walker brings to light experiences of racism that were often omitted or merely hinted at in traditional historical narratives.
Revisit the Past. Rethink the Present.
