The Burn
Pittwaterfolk, herewith an excellent report from
Capt. Andrew Cutler WP Brigade on the recent Lovett Bay burn, you’ll
all find interesting
The Lovett burn at the top of Elvina Fire Trail was successfully
completed over Sunday 12th & Monday 13th of October. This was a 200
hectare burn that has been planned for two years and we been frustrated
by weather numerous times. It stretches from the Elvina fire trail down
the Waterfall trail and up the Salvation Creek defile to the West Head
Road.
Fire Control called us on Saturday night at 19:00 and asked if we could
have a crew ready to light up at 10:00 the next morning. I would like
to thank all those who made themselves available both during the day
and night shifts at such short notice.
The reason they pushed forward so urgently with the burn is that it
protects Lovett, Elvina Bays and McCarr’s Creek from fire coming out of
the west which is our high risk direction. The district had the
resources available both with local crews and out of district Strike
teams from Gosford, and most importantly it is highly probable this was
the last weather window to get the burn in for the next 8 -12 months
hence the decision to go at the last minute.
Due to some delays in lighting up the West Head road sector we came
under a little pressure containing that control line. The crews and
Helicopter crews did a fantastic job chasing down a couple of spots
down the Waratah Trail in the afternoon and evening as the Nor-easterly
built.
The next day we had a couple of helicopters finish the burn with an
Aerial Incendiary run in the centre of the area.
I drove the burn yesterday afternoon and now after 70mm of rain it will
be very cool. The wind last night should also have brought down any
weakened branches but remember if you are walking on the fireground be
aware of any weakened limbs for a little while.
I would like to thank all the West Pittwater Crews with support from
SI, Coal and Candle brigades as well as the Gosford Strike team and the
NPWS fire mitigation crew who worked very hard laying and recovering
hoses and recovering down the Waterfall trail.
