* SHOW NOTES
.. THIRD THURSDAYS AT JUDGE BEANS have been outstanding shows, reaching new musical highs each time - didn't think it possible. The musicians will be hitting the road for the touring season - so there'll only be one more Third Thursday, April 15th.
What's a Third Thursday like - 3 sets of music - over 30 songs - all well done! You might call it a Wade Hayes/Merlefest since that's a good portion of the music that's performed. Spice it up with covers of a little Gary Stewart and Keith Whitley and throw in some unspected - like Kevin Ray singing Stevie Wonder's "Superstition; Wade on Hank Jr's "Family Tradition and ZZ Topp's Tush," guest Lee Roy Parnell doing the Bob Wills classic, "Trouble in MInd;" and Wade and Lee Roy trading guitar licks and vocals on "Great Afternoon." And it wouldn't be a Third Thursday if Wade didn't let the band loose on the instrumental classics, "Hummingbird" and "Orange-Blossom" special. The air was sizzling.
.. STARS GO BLUE FOR COLON CANCER held at Loveless Barn on March 23 - a great evening of acoustic performances. Opening act was Mike Snider, well known for his humor as much as for his ability as a banjoist. He delivered - great musicianship and laugh out loud wit. He was followed by an in-the-round set of Gretchen Peters, Wade, Peter Cooper, and Mike Reid. "In-the round" is a Nashville custom of artist/songwriters taking turns, playing acoustically, choosing to present their older, well known music or something they might be working on that day. Gretchen Peters wrote the1995 CMA song of the year, "Independence Day." She performed "Bus to St. Cloud." Wade did "Old Enough to Know Better," "What's a Broken Heart to You," and "I'm Still Dancin' With You." Mike Reid, a former All-Pro football player, is now equally well-known for his musicianship. He was particularly complimentary of Wade. At one point, he said, "I don't know what it sounds like to you out there, but up here it sounds like Wade is 11 feet tall and 300 pounds." When Mike did his first major hit, Ronnie Millsaps "There's a Stranger in this House," (the 1984 Grammy winner for best country song), Wade started some picking with it. Mike leaned across his keyboard, gave Wade a smile and a nod and let him take a turn on the guitar. When Wade finished, Mike swept his arm toward him and announced, "That's musicianship - Wade Hayes!" The last set of the evening included Bill Miller and Rodney Crowell, both Grammy award winners. Bill, a native American, started the set with a haunting performance of "Amazing Grace" on an Indian wooden flute. Rodney's contribution for the evening were some of his newest material. The Loveless Barn, a relatively new venue, built next to the historic "Loveless Cafe," is a very comfortable venue with great sound. WSM-am broadcasts some regular Wednesday night performances from there. I'm looking forward to going back.
