L.A. Works Because of You
For the past two decades, L.A. Works has worked hard to bring together the Los Angeles community through service. Though the projects and events have grown and evolved over the years, the objective to make volunteering easy and fun has remained steadfast. We look forward to seeing L.A. Works thrive another 20 years thanks to your hard work and dedication to making a difference in LA.   We hope you have a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Commemorating King's Birthday
On January 16, more than 1000 community and corporate volunteers will revitalize the campus of a Title I elementary school in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Feliz to help commemorate MLK Jr. Day in Los Angeles. Volunteers will spend the morning enhancing the school campus with elements like creating colorful murals in the playground space, painting school buildings and grounds, planting flowers, shrubs and landscaping to create an outdoor literacy space, renovating an unused blacktop area to create a community garden, and assisting the teachers in organizing and beautifying the interior classroom areas. Service Crawl LA: A Race to Give Back
In celebration of 20 successful years of service to the community, L.A. Works spearheaded the first ever Service Crawl where teams of volunteers raced around LA engaging in diverse service projects at a variety of agencies. Volunteers solved clues that led them to each destination, gained points for completing tasks, and won prizes for their efforts. From the starting line to the finishing line it was undeniable that all the teams were “feeling helpful and engaged in the community”, shared Eric Kissack, Team East Side Crawlers Captain.
  • 77 holiday gifts wrapped for seniors
  • 1,000 Thanksgiving place settings assembled for a homeless shelter
  • 50 bedroom sets sanded for at-risk youth
  • 10 flower beds planted for a women’s shelter
  • 62 volunteers racing around Los Angeles engaged in service in the first ever Service Crawl (in the rain no less!) = PRICELESS

Home Depot Volunteers @ the VA
The Freedom Barber Shop, a star-spangled trailer anchored in a parking lot on the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs campus, is a haven for the veterans. The Barber Shop is the invisible center of the VA. It’s like a small town barber shop where people come by to chat, gossip, gripe, grieve and support one another. On December 3, volunteers from Home Depot removed and replaced old flooring, replaced the old baseboard, painted interior & exterior of the trailer, created a gathering space with planter benches, added plants and flowers, replaced covering on the roof to prevent leaking, created shade structures in front of trailer for wheelchair bound patrons, and enhanced the trailer’s landscaping.

UPOX Volunteers to Benefit LAUSD
On Tuesday, November 8, more than 150 volunteers from University of Phoenix took a break from the LIFT Conference to collect art supplies and build easels to benefit six Title 1 Los Angeles Unified School District schools.“University of Phoenix is committed to removing barriers to education at all levels,” said University of Phoenix Chief Operating Officer Dianne Pusch. “Arts education helps young people broaden their minds. By working with L.A. Works to support the arts for these LAUSD schools, University of Phoenix can have a direct impact on the lives of these young Californians.”

Jaclyn Kloeppel:
Nominated as a Terrific Leader
For the past four years, Jaclyn Kloeppel
has worked tirelessly at the Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission – first helping to serve food, and then taking on leadership duties for the entire volunteer team. With utmost respect and courtesy, she always greets the mission residents with a sunny smile and friendly banter – it’s more than simply serving the residents – she treats everyone like old friends. For the other volunteers, Jaclyn does more than just lead by example – she tutors new volunteers, answers any questions and keeps morale strong with her humour and her creativity – which includes bringing in a variety of food and treats for volunteers, or hosting dress-up themes as part of holidays – and even giving small gifts for volunteers, recognizing them for their participation. Remembering Alan Mootnick

Mourning the Loss of Alan Mootnick
We are sad to share the loss of a long-time nonprofit partner, Alan Mootnick. Alan was a self-described modern-day Tarzan who founded the nonprofit Gibbon Conservation Center in Santa Clarita in 1976. In interviews, he stated that his aim was to advance the study, propagation and protection of the endangered species. The center is today home to the largest and rarest group of gibbons in the Western Hemisphere. "This was a man who was completely dedicated to these animals," said Mootnick's cousin Geri-Ann Galanti, an anthropologist and board member for the gibbon sanctuary. "He gave his life to them." L.A. Works had monthly projects with Alan at the Gibbon Conservation Center; Alan will be missed.

The remainder of the programming focuses on individuals with disabilities, animal welfare, and environmental conservation. Thank you for your consideration and generosity!

Make a donation as a gift to honor a birthday, anniversary, or just because! Specify which social issue you want your dollars to go to and we’ll send the honoree a personalized email acknowledging that cause with your gift.
