Product Updates at SLO Natural Foods

In grocery we now have Runa brand drinks that contain guayusa, a "super-leaf" from the holly genus (Ilex) that contains caffeine and polyphenols. We have three flavors: Lime, Hibiscus Berry, and Half & Half (lemonade and iced tea -- aka, an 'Arnold Palmer'). All are USDA organic, non-GMO, and Fair Trade. We're also now carrying La Tourangelle Artisan Oils. We have Walnut Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, and Thai Wok Oil. The Wok Oil is safflower oil infused with Thai Basil and Lemongrass. All are expeller pressed and non-GMO. All of La Tourangelle's nut oils are pressed in Woodland, CA from nuts grown mostly in the USA.

Another new brand in Grocery is Nuvia, and we're now carrying their healthier coffees: NuviaTrim and NuviaCafeNuvia Trim ingredients are green coffee bean, raspberry ketone, African mango, green tea with ECGC, ganoderma, and garcinia cambogia. The Nuvia Cafe is made from Sumatran Arabica coffee, ganoderma, ECGC, and pomegranate. Both drinks are nutritious, and are dairy-, lactose-, soy-free, vegan, and contain no GMOs, no artificial additives, no sweeteners, no preservatives. If you came to our Local Vendor Fair and Annual Member Meeting in May, you may have met Larry Kandarian of Kandarian Organic Farms in Los Osos. He grows non-GMO and organically certified ancient grains, seeds, herbs, spices, peas, beans, and gourmet pollens. We have a lot of Larry's products here at the Co-op, including Sonora White Wheat, Triticale, Red Millet, Garbanzo Beans, Brown Flax Seed, Fennel Seed, Fenugreek Seed, White Mustard Seed, Chia Seed, Evening Primrose Seed, Dill Seed, and Coriander. You'll find Larry's packaged products on the shelves about the bulk bins.

In Herbs, we have Oriental Stir Fry Seasoning Mix in the Culinary Section. It's organic and origin is the United States. Ingredients are sesame seeds, red bell pepper, garlic, onion, celery seed, lemon peel, orange peel, chili pepper, and ginger. All ingredients are organic. In the tea section we have several new organic and Fair Trade Certified teas: Indian Black, English Breakfast, Jasmine Green, Irish Breakfast, and Chunmee Green.

In Chill we have some tasty meats for summer grilling starting off with grass-fed and organic tri-tip from Nick Ranch in Santa Margarita. We also have a good selection of grass-fed meats from Harmony Farms including a variety of steaks (T-bone, sirloin, and filet mignon) as well as hamburger and turkey patties.

In Wellness, Jessica has brought in Tera's Whey protein powders in several formulations, including Goat Whey, perfect for those sensitive to cow's milk. Other varieties are rBGH Free, Sustained Energy, and Hunger Control. We have single serving sizes, 12 oz., and 24 oz. containers in plain unsweetened, vanilla, and Fair Trade dark chocolate cocoa. In the refrigerated section you'll find Barlean's Swirls, an Omega-3 supplement (including one vegan option), in various formulations, flavors, and sizes. These are all discounted 20% for the month of July.

2015 CCMA Conference

In June, General Manager Gwen Schmidt and Board Member Eric Michielssen traveled to Boise, Idaho for the 2015 Consumer Cooperative Management Association (CCMA) Conference. 400 people representing 75 food cooperatives attended. Gwen and Eric were able to receive scholarship funds that helped defray the costs of attendance.

Both found the sessions to be very informative and helpful; they learned new strategies for better product selection and pricing and how to compete in "the new normal" where organic products are now widely available in grocery stores as well as big box stores. Gwen and Eric also learned more about the National Co+op Grocers and how NCG membership will benefit our owners and shoppers via competitive pricing, professional development, and operational and marketing best practices, among others.

For more information on the CCMA and a recap of the conference , read here.

A Fond Farewell to Board Member, Steven Boothe

Many of you know Steven Boothe, champion, loyal supporter, and Board Member of SLO Natural Foods Co-op. Steven is realizing a dream and embarking on a grand new adventure: life in New Zealand! He will be starting his new job and relocating later this month. We wish Steven and his family all good things, but we sure will miss them here at the Co-op.

Congress, Consumers, and GMOs

Republican Representative Mike Pompeo of Kansas has proposed a bill that would override state laws requiring disclosure of GMOs in food and instead replace those laws with a voluntary system overseen by the federal government. Pompeo's bipartisan bill, called the "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act" is expected to be voted on in the House by the end of the month.
