Charlie relaxed as she entered the apartment. He had her there and they had a chance to sort the relationship out.
She stopped just inside the door and froze. “This is your home. Not mine.” She shook her head. “Charlie, this looks exactly like when I left. Didn’t you change anything? Didn’t your girlfriends get upset?”
“What girlfriends? I didn’t bring anyone home.” He ate, slept, studied his flight plans and trained. He had no time for other women. Besides, he didn’t want anyone else.
“You didn’t date? You’re a freaking astronaut. Women practically fall at your feet.” She moved aside as he closed the door. “You’ve had so many slip their number to you when we were together.”
“They did and I never called them.” He put the bag on the sofa. “Hungry? I’ve got spaghetti.” That, and he didn’t want to talk about other women.
“I—Charlie. Don’t change the subject.”
“Who changed the subject?” He did, but whatever. “I didn’t cheat on you. Didn’t want to—ever,” he said. “Do you want food?”
“Never once?”
“Nope.” He leaned against the half-wall between the kitchen and living room. “I was with you. No one else. Afterwards, I didn’t want to be with anyone.”
“And yet you were going to do that show?” She glared at him. “That’s terrible.”
“I did it to publicize the damn mission.” Why didn’t she understand?
“Did you do anything or anyone else for the mission? Lisa, maybe?”
Ah, there was the jealousy he’d expected. She never did trust him. He loved her because they fought hard, then made up even harder.
“You love one person. Space. The rest come second. I’m not sure I made the list. Did she like being on the back burner?”
He’d let her say enough. He wasn’t in the mood to get his ass handed to him for something he hadn’t done. “Enough.”
She opened her mouth, then closed it. “Sorry.”
He didn’t yell often and hated having to make his point this way. “First, I never slept with Lisa. She did the show to get back at me and the company because she wasn’t chosen. She doesn’t like me. Never did. Second, I love one person. Her name is Luna. Not the moon. Not space. You. I told you that. You’re my world.” He crossed the room to her and cupped her jaw. “The only reason you didn’t seem to be first is because I’m an intense guy. I’m devoted to my job, but that doesn’t mean I love you any less. Yes, Luna. I love you.” There. Let her chew on that.
“Charlie.” Luna toyed with her keys. “Don’t say what you don’t mean.”
“Why would I do that?”
“I don’t know.” She stared at him. “You get so intense about your job.”
“It’s my life. I’m a pilot. If I don’t focus, then shit gets cocked up.” She knew that.
“I know,” she murmured. “You’re brilliant at your job and crazy about flying.”
“I’m crazy about you.” He refused to let go. “I mean it. I’m nuts about you. Just you.”
She didn’t fight him. “Is that why you didn’t change the apartment? You hoped I’d come back?”
“I left it because I’m lazy, but yes, I wanted you back and wanted our home to look the same. Always. I never wanted you to go.” Why didn’t she understand?

The corners of her eyes stung. He kept saying the right things, but he must’ve forgotten how much time she spent alone. She had no doubts he loved her, but he loved his job more.
“Look, tell the film crew to set up here. Let them see us.” He rested his forehead against hers. “I can’t do this without you.”
“No, you can’t.” She stared into his eyes and swore he saw straight to her soul. “Without me, you’re still single.” There. She’d gotten him right back.
“I belong to you.”
Damn him. He didn’t understand. Playacting would tear her up inside.
“Lu, I wouldn’t beg if it were anyone else. You make me whole,” he murmured. He swayed with her. “I can’t lie to you.”
“You make me crazy.” She tucked her hands into his back pockets. The money would be good and the publicity would help the space program. She and Charlie were good together. If they showed a positive relationship to the office, maybe the space program would benefit.
“Lu?” He brushed his nose along hers. “Baby?”
She loved when he called her by their pet names. “I’ll do it.”
“You will?” Genuine shock resonated in his eyes.
“Yeah, but I need to pack some stuff, but I’ll be over in an hour,” she said. She had to be nuts, but she wanted to be with him, even if it was just a sham.
“Come back faster. I don’t know how quickly the film crew will arrive,” Charlie kissed her. The inviting warmth of his mouth and the tenderness of the kiss washed over her. Like they’d never been apart. He held her closer. “My girl.”
She had to get into character. She didn’t want to lie, but Charlie needed to be focused and in a positive frame of mind. If she could help by being there for him, then she’d do it. “Your girl.”
“Hurry.” He let go. “I’ll be waiting.”
“I know.” She walked away, but a piece of her heart stayed with Charlie. She’d hate herself when this was over and she had the feeling she’d fall for him all over again. He’d leave her for space. For all she knew, he might not come back. But she loved him. Damn it. He owned her heart.
