John 2:11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

IN HIM WAS LIFE: IN ABUNDANCE

There have been many people throughout history who have attempted to "show forth" their glory. They have built monuments, waged war, won games, spoken wisdom and created gadgets. But who has ever attempted to show forth his greatness by giving away wine at an obscure back country wedding?

The evangelists each shared events in Jesus life which were tailored to the various themes and purposes for which they wrote. None of the first three evangelists found room for this particular account. John, who wants us to see the Life which he saw "early on the first day of the week," finds this event compelling and essential.

Because it shows the life which Christ wants for us. Not one of dreary solemnity. Not one of need only, but one of abundance, one of joy. There is no compelling need, and yet Jesus gives, and He gives the best.

We are like children who receive a brand new expensive mountain bike for Christmas and complain because it is green and we wanted blue. Even if we don't say it with our mouths, in our hearts we often think that Jesus neither listens nor answers our prayers. Too often, like spoiled children, when even a tiny little thing doesn't go the way we want, we throw a fit. Yet the truth is our lives are filled with an amazing abundance of good things.
