Short Takes

Columbine. Virginia Tech. Aurora, Colorado. And now Newtown.  I shoot a lot of projects, but one that was very special was for Mayors Against Illegal Guns.  We shot in a movie theater with Stephen Barton, a survivor of the Aurora, Colorado shootings. Directed by Julian Mulvey.

THE BUTLER is a new film by Lee Daniels, the director of PRECIOUS. Using my Sony F3 camera, I got to shoot background plates for this upcoming feature, starring Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker. In fact, for a few seconds, I am Forest Whitaker

UNDERDOGS is a series for Sports Illustrated, and I shot the very first episode at Friendship School in Anacostia, DC. No locker rooms, no dedicated field, and almost no funding, yet all of the team's seniors will attend college on sports scholarships.

I spend most of my time shooting, but MUSIC FOR THE SOUL is a piece I produced and directed for the PBS show, MY GENERATION. This video deals with music therapy, and how it helps people who suffer from strokes, Alzheimer's, and other brain issues. -- watch the segment --

WILLIS GIDNEY is back!

Willis Gidney is my private eye. He first appeared in 2010's DRINK THE TEA , which won the PWA Competition for Best First novel.  Gidney appeared again in 2011 in STEAL THE SHOW. Both books got great reviews.  So how come there was no Willis Gidney book in 2012?

It's case of real life getting in the way of fiction.  But you'll be pleased to know that Gidney and Lilly will be back in FACE THE MUSIC. I'm working hard on this book now, trying to get it ready. Meantime, you can read about Willis in A PLACE FOR SULLY, one of the short stories in ERASED, a collection due out Spring, 2013, from Antenna Books.

While you're waiting, you can listen to the jazz sounds of the Willis Gidney Quintet.

Thanks for reading,
