Welcome to July!

This issue of the Kitty Times will focus largely on petfood, which seems to be in the news a lot lately.

Nestle may purchase Champion Petfoods for $2 billion

Nestle is in talks to purchase Champion Petfoods, a dog and cat food and treats maker located in Edmonton, Alberta. The  Canada-based company has agreed to sell for more than US$2 billion, although the transaction is not assured, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Nestle’s consideration of Champion may be related to pressure from activist investor Daniel Loeb, who recently published a letter criticizing Nestle for not delivering increased profits for shareholders quickly enough.

Note: This is not about quality of ingredients or your pet's health, but about money.

Are cats really obligate carnivores? New study questions old beliefs

Dogs prefer to eat fat, and cats surprisingly tend toward carbs. According to Jean Hall, a professor in the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University, "Some experts have thought cats need diets that are 40 or 50 percent protein. Our findings are quite different than the numbers used in marketing and are going to really challenge the pet food industry."

How to choose your pets' food

If you want a no-nonsense, EASY way to determine which dog or cat foods to eliminate from your top choices, here is one easy tip …

Take a look at the pet food label, and if you see any of the following 6 phrases, put the bag or can down and move on to the next product:

1. Meat by-products
2. Animal fat
3. Animal digest
4. Ethoxyquin
5. BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole)
6. BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)

There are so many foods out there that have better quality ingredients, don’t bother with products that have any of the 6 ingredients listed above.

You can learn more about each of the 6 ingredients above by clicking this link to Petful:

Cop Makes Woman Sit In Hot Car After Leaving Dog Inside

This story is about a dog, but it could just as easily be about a child, or a cat! NO one should be left in a hot car.

In response to the woman’s attitude, the officer suggested that, since she didn’t believe conditions were so bad in her car, she should sit in there with the doors closed, windows rolled up, and engine off – just like her dog had – while he wrote her a ticket.
