Next Wednesday Peter Metelerkamp will be visiting BPS with his talk that was originally scheduled for 17 July. This promises to be an excellent evening of documentary photography from this well known local photographer.
 
 
Studio Group
The next studio event is now arranged; by popular demand, it will be a return visit to a Karate Club in Clevedon starting at 6:30pm on Thursday 15 August. There is a limit of 6 photographers and it will be on a first come first served basis. As always, once the initial places are filled, there will be a waiting list and anyone who signs up on the waiting list will get priority at a future event. We have visited this club once before but they now have a new venue.

PSA Inter-Club Creative Competition
The final round of this season's PSA Inter-Club Creative Competition has just been completed and BPS finished a very creditable 2nd in their group. A very big thank you is due to all members whose images have kept us in the leading pack for the last two years. The final club totals and individual scores are shown below.

Society of Biology’s amateur photography competition is now open for entries, the deadline being 31 July. The theme is ‘Feeding Life’ and they are seeking original amateur photographs that encapsulate this theme. The following is an extract from their publicity:
Food provides the foundation to life. Not only can we not live without food, but the wrong diet can have serious health consequences. Biology research and field work play a vital role in understanding how all organisms on the planet receive the energy they need to keep on living.
There are 2 categories in the competition, each with a cash prize:
•    Photographer of the Year (over 18) - £1000 top prize
•    Young Photographer of the Year (under 18) - £500 top prize and a copy of Adobe Lightroom.

Places to Visit
RPS South West Region Members' Exhibition - 1 July - 25 October at the Royal Devon & Exeter (Wonford) Hospital, The exhibition is displayed in the main corridor outside the restaurant, showing 50 pieces of work from SW Region members. For more details please click here
 
Bristol Harbour Festival - This annual free event in the city docks will be held on Saturday & Sunday (27 - 28 July). There is a full programme of events and this year sees the return of the Saturday night fireworks display.

Castle Combe Motor Racing Circuit - Saturday 3 August is their Summer Race Day. There is a full programme of events, including Saloon cars, Sports & GT, Formula Ford and much more - full details here
 
Festival of British Eventing - 2 - 4 August at Gatcombe Park. This renowned event takes place at Gatcombe Park, spectacular home of the Princess Royal and which incorporates the British Open, Intermediate and Novice Championships. As well as a weekend of top class eventing there will be a shopping village, arena attractions and entertainment for all the family.
 
Gloucester Steam & Vintage Extravaganza - The 39th annual Gloucestershire Steam & Vintage Extravaganza will take place at South Cerney Airfield, Cirencester from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 August. The show is packed full of exhibits, displays and stalls to keep the whole family entertained for hours. Alongside the hundreds of vintage vehicles will be the popular steam driven vintage fun fair, 'electric yachts', the waltzer, the big wheel, the steam-driven 'gallopers', face painting, dodgems, a ghost train and traditional arcade games. The popular Ken Fox Wall of Death will make a welcome return for 2013 and hopefully wow the crowds as they perform tricks, acrobatics and high-speed chases on their 1920’s Indian motorcycles. All of this plus an Animal and Countryside selection featuring a diverse range of animals including poultry, Shire Horses, rare breeds, Alpacas and Ferrets. Web: Steam & Vintage Extravaganza
 
And if that all proves to be just too much, why not hop on the bus to Weston for the Weston Lions Real Ale & Cider Festival which runs this weekend (Friday to Saturday) at Beach Lawns, Marine Parade, W-S-M, BS23 1AY. Web: Weston Lions Beer & Cider Festival 

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
If you want to blow your own trumpet or, dare I say such a thing, blow someone else's trumpet for them, then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include it in the next issue.
