WINTERSLEEP

Ten years ago, the members of Wintersleep began working on songs in a small apartment in Halifax, NS. This is the second most notable thing about this particularly drab apartment complex next to the fact that, due to an oversight by the architect, if the pool on the roof was ever filled – the building would tip over. The songs they created were strange, full of rural ghosts and forgotten landscapes.

Late in the summer of 2011, the group fleshed out these new ideas with Scottish producer/friend Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai) and Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, MGMT) at the legendary Tarbox Road Studios in upstate New York. Secluded in the same woods that had already seen the creation of so much amazing work, the group committed themselves to long, focused recording sessions…and the occasional badminton match. Doogan can crush a bird. Who knew?

CARINA ROUND

Carina Round has carved a singular path in music with her inimitable voice and stirringly varied compositions. Her uncompromising vision and thrilling versatility has garnered an immensely passionate fan base including a myriad of highly regarded musicians. Her fourth full-length, Tigermending comes from a painting by Amy Cutler where three women sit in a field dutifully stitching the bellies of a heap of helpless tigers. Carina recounts, “The first time I saw the painting I stared at it for a long time not understanding why. The absurd image absorbed me. There was an innocent simplicity to it. The gentle putting back together of something most ferocious and wild mysteriously damaged to the point of submission.”

Morcheeba frontwoman Skye returns this Autumn with her stunning new solo record Back To No’. With Morcheeba, Skye sold over 6 million albums and after a 7 year break in 2003, she returned to the band and they completed a successful 18 month tour around Europe, America, Canada & South America. Skye then started to write for her third solo album with longtime collaborator and husband Steve Gordon. This pivotal work fine-tunes the music that we heard before on Skye’s 2006 debut Mind How You Go and her 2nd solo album ‘Keeping Secrets’, released in 2009. Back To Now signals a new direction, with ingenious tracks and flawless arrangements that lend gravitas. You can’t help but fall in love with Skye’s ever mesmerising charisma.

CHARLIE PEACOCK

A mainstay of the Nashville music scene Charlie Peacock is one of the most prolific cultural influencers to come out of Nashville. The Grammy Award-winning producer, songwriter, has recently became more visible on the Americana scene for his work on The Civil Wars’ breakout album, Barton Hollow. Peacock’s sheer volume of work is impressive, but it’s his ability to stir up and spur on the creative community that makes him so singular. To understand Peacock’s cultural sway, take a look at the recent U2 concert in Nashville, where Bono gave him a shout-out from beneath the colossal claw.

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS

Great Lake Swimmers have long been a word-of-mouth favorite in their home country of Canada for whom critical mass was inevitable. With timeless melodies telling undiscovered stories, their new album, New Wild Everywhere, maintains an acute respect for the folk tradition, while at the same time transforming it for new listeners everywhere. It picks up where the previous album left off, exploring transcendence in the natural world to describe the universal themes of love, mortality and escape. There is an elemental energy that moves from physical to spiritual and from the immediate present to an all-encompassing future, all represented by Dekker’s ability to weave insightful lyrics into deceptively simple, hook-laden tunes.

ALEX CORNISH

Alex Cornish is a singer-songwriter from Dunbar, Scotland, a seaside town just outside Edinburgh. He has produced three critically acclaimed albums to date; ‘Until the Traffic Stops’ in 2009, ‘Call Back’ in 2010 and ‘No Shore’ in 2011, all of which were made at home with his band. What is remarkable is how well these home recordings have been received – songs on the BBC Radio 2 playlist, repeat sessions for BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 1, songs have been used in Hollywood movies, in TV shows, "a voice to stand comparison to Thom Yorke" said The Scotsman on Sunday and "a beautiful album that has Mercury Music Prize nomination written all over it" said The Sunday Times.
