Wednesday 17 August

Next Wednesday we welcome back an old friend of BPS Peter Weaver LRPS APAGB CPAGB, who will be presenting his talk called "Welcome to the Show", which follows twelve different events showing a variety of subject matter: country shows, steam fairs, music events and strange competitions.
Here's what Peter says of his talk:

'I enjoy doing event photography, not just country shows and steam fairs but a whole variety of sometimes wacky events. I do not aim to make fun of people but show the event in my own style, not just to document it but to show some of its characteristics. People go to these events to have fun. The talk will show the following events- Appleby Horse Fair, Marshfield Mummers, Royal Welsh Show, Gloucestershire Steam & Vintage Show, Keynsham Music Festival, Berkeley Show, Stockton Vintage Festival, Great Dorset Steam Fair, Widecombe Fair, Stroud Wassail, Newent Onion Festival & The Lowland Games.'

A couple of images from the talk:

Job Vacancy!
As many of you will probably know, following his death in 2021, Bob Faris left a considerable amount of money to the Society (£25k+). It is Bob's daughter, Paula's wish that this money is not just absorbed into the club coffers but is put to use or uses that we wouldn't normally do. To this end, we propose running an all-day photographic event next Spring when we would like to have two notable speakers, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with one of these speakers reflecting Bob's leaning towards creative photography. The event will be held at a location away from Unit13 (we have provisionally booked a couple of alternative dates in May 2023 at the British Aerospace BAWA club at Filton) and will be offered as a "free to attend" event, with tickets being available not just to BPS members but also to photographers from much further afield.

This is something that we would like to make a regular event in Bob's memory and if this is to happen the whole day needs to be a resounding success. To make this the success we are hoping for we need to promote the event far and wide, using all the options available to us: the web, emails, posters etc - so where is all this leading and what has it got to do with a job vacancy? Well, we are looking for someone who can promote the event for us and help us reach the target of 250+ attendees. If you have a bent towards doing this sort of thing, or do it in your day to day work and think that you could help, please collar Ralph or me at any Wednesday meeting, or drop me a line at bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk

Here's looking to a full mailbox!

Bob Faris, Jim & Elizabeth Marsden
Following on from an item in issue 494 which mentioned a date for your diary when we will be celebrating the lives of Bob, Jim & Elizabeth. The families have now issued a formal invitation to all members to this special day. Covid prevented many from attending the funerals of Jim & Bob and this will give everyone who knew them a chance to pay their respects and to refresh memories as to what they got up to (photographically) during their time at BPS, which between them totalled more than 140 years!

Masters of Print
Master of Print 2023

It is back! We are ready! I am delighted to help with coordinating the entry for the club – again!

I understand the rules for entry have been tightened a little this year such that no entries will be accepted that have “medalled or been accepted (or seen!)” in PAGB salons. The organisers want to see fresh new work.  Full rules can be seen here

We won in 2020 but were nudged into second place in 2021 by Catchlight CC, we are not bitter Frown but revenge can be sweet Smile. Please let me know if you want to join in the fun by emailing me at  progsec@bristolphoto.org.uk. I still have lists from last year so expect a very gentle nudge.

There are 3 Categories, Mono, Colour and Nature. Prints will need to be on A3 paper – don’t rule yourself out if you cannot print or do A3 as Mike Martin and I can provide the service. A maximum of 5 prints can be entered by an individual, cost is £3 per print, £15 maximum expenditure.

If you are new to external competitions it is the ideal first start to catch “salon fever", something a lot of club members are afflicted with. Very few prints will make the cut to be published and awarded but the club scores a point with every entry. If you require constructive advice on potential entries, there are plenty of “experts” (cough) who can be of assistance
  • 1 point for every Print entered, plus
  • 3 points for every Print scored 13 or over by the Judges, plus
  • 5 points for every Print accepted into the Exhibition.
Last year we amassed 99 points, but I know we can do better. Smile

The entry is now open, yay, so let’s get those juices flowing.

Thank you, in advance -  Mopsters!
