Last month we closed down our Mainland China apartment/store rooms, and sent over 80 boxes of 1.2 tonnes to HongKong. Lots of beads! We’ve had a place in Guangzhou for over 16-years – now we’ll have to stay at a hotel.
MiMi and I have been in HongKong for over 25-years. However, it’s not as nice there as it used to be. Very slowly after the hand-over from British rule, everything changed. ‘Mother tongue’ teaching, where lessons have to be in Chinese rather than English, has resulted in the latest generation not understanding my McDonald’s order.
Another problem is population swell. People moan in the UK when a million extra arrive - but in HongKong, smaller than Greater London, there are over 3-million Mainlanders visiting every month, on top of a 10% rise in 7-million residencies over the past decade. It’s hard to get a seat in a restaurant or on a train at any time. Everywhere is crowded.
No wonder property is at Central London prices and petrel at £1.30 a litre. Although a 20-mile train ride is only about £1, a pint of milk will set you back £2. I pay £1.80 for 6-slices of soft bread, because I don’t like the sweetness of cheaper types. Heinz baked beans are £1.30 a can, but beer and wine is cheap. No VAT or sales tax. Of course a lot of this is imported, rice cost next to nothing, but vegetables are about the same as in Britain.
Then there is the pollution. At one time, blue skies were the norm – now you can’t see the top of the Peak across the harbour from Kowloon most days. Everything in the distance is grey. Face masks aren’t just for germs.
This isn’t helped by the heat. Global warming has resulted in the usually extreme weather, getting even more so. Last month in Fanling, the 37c sun left my shirt as wet as in a heavy rain storm while pushing bead boxes to our pad. Picture is one of the deliveries from our Guangzhou flat - 600kgs.
So there you have it. It’s still fun in HongKong with great food and beaches, but Norwich is a fine City with almost a millennium of culture, and I love taking my boat out on the Norfolk Broads. At least in the UK you’ll get your beads faster!
