Exactly one year after his daughter Abir was fatally wounded, Bassam Aramin and Elik Elhanan begin a national speaking tour with Combatants for Peace. Bassam's wife Salwa and daughter Areen will be present. Join us in solidarity, welcome them to Orange County, and remember Abir.
On January 16, 2007, 3 Palestinian girls were walking home from school in Anata, East Jerusalem. An Israeli Border Police jeep drove through the school zone firing rubber bullets. Abir was wounded and died 3 days later. She was 10 years old. ABIR'S GARDEN has emerged as a way of memorializing Abir by building a safe place for her classmates to gather, play and heal on the grounds of her school.
Combatants for Peace are former Israeli and Palestinian fighters who no longer see each other as enemies. They advocate together for an end to the Occupation. Abir's father, Bassam Aramin was a Fatah fighter and served 7 years in an Israeli prison. He now heads the Al Quds Association for Democracy and Dialogue. In 2007 he received the Bremen Peace Award for reconciliation work in the Middle East and the Eliav-Sartawi Award for Middle Eastern Journalism by Search for Common Ground. Elik Elhanan, military refuser, served as a soldier in an IDF combat unit from 1995-98. In 1997 his sister was killed by a Palestinian suicide bombing in Jerusalem. He speaks all over the world and is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Middle East Studies at Columbia University.
The Combatants for Peace national tour is organized by The Rebuilding Alliance and Women of a Certain Age. For more information and to and support the Abir's Garden Project go to RebuildingAlliance.org Donations to help build "Abir's Garden, a Safe Place to Grow" are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to "The Rebuilding Alliance." All online donations will help Abir's Garden qualify for a 50K challenge grant!

Feb 1 (1st Friday) 6:30, Orange: Moving Pictures: Friday Night Film Series Recycled Life For over sixty years, children have been born and raised here, parents and grandparents eat and survive here.. Thousands of families thrived in the largest and most toxic and dangerous area in all of Central America. For decades, the Guatemala City Garbage Dump and its inhabitant ("guajeros") who recycle the city's trash have been shunned by society and ignored by the government, until a disastrous and fateful event in January 2005 forever changed the face of this landfill and the many people who've called it home...the film- makers have captured the beauty, humor and remarkable contrast that resonates throughout this vast waste- land of garbage, as generations of families struggle through an ongoing cycle of life.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange present films that raise awareness and encourage conversation about the dynamic, ever-changing, systemic and critical needs of our world. Through a variety of titles and topics, attendees explore what it means to live in relationship with each other, our neighbors ant the whole community of life. The evening includes refreshments, and dialogue - often with the film makers themselves, and possible opportunities for action

(program change) Feb 9 (2nd Saturday) 6:30-8:30pm, Irvine: ReclaimDemocracy.org Orange County Chapter meeting The Power of Nightmares, Part II ("The Phantom Victory") Due to popular demand, ReclaimDemocracy.org will be screening part II of The Power of Nightmares as a follow up to their January meeting The previously scheduled screening of "Money As Debt" has been postponed to a later meeting. Don't worry if you missed part 1; I'll provide a synopsis just prior to our next meeting.
In this film, filmmaker Adam Curtis compares the rise of the American Neo-Conservative movement and the radical Islamist movement, noting strong similarities between the two. More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organized force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is in fact a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries-and particularly American Neo-Conservatives-in an attempt to unite and inspire their people following the failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies. The Power of Nightmares has been praised by film critics in both Britain and the United States. Its message and content have also been the subject of various critiques and criticisms from conservatives and progressives.
Join us as we view this film and engage in our always lively and provocative follow-up discussion. The meeting is free and refreshments are served. at the Irvine Ranch Water District building at 15600 Sand Canyon Ave. reclaimdemocracyoc.org

MARCH

Mar 7 (1st Friday) 6:30, Orange: Moving Pictures: Friday Night Film Series Born Into Brothels Winner of the 2005 Academy Award for Best Documentary Film. The most stigmatized people in Calcutta's red light district are not the prostitutes, but their children. In the face of abject poverty, abuse, and despair, these kids have little possibility of escaping their mother's fate or for creating another type of life. In Born into Brothels, directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman chronicle the amazing transformation of the children they come to know in the red light district. Briski, a professional photographer, gives them lessons and cameras, igniting latent sparks of artistic genius that reside in these children who live in the most sordid and seemingly hopeless world.

Saturdays and Sundays, 9am-noon, 1-4pm, Silverado Fire Clean-up Every weekend for the next several weekends (including Thanksgiving) we are running volunteer work crews on Saturday and Sunday. There are two shifts available each day, 9am to noon and 1pm to 4pm. Current activity includes yard clean-up, making sandbags and placing sandbags, gravel bags and hay/rice bales on homeowner's property to mitigate slide damage this winter. We will also be conducting a creek clean-up in Silverado and Modjeska very soon. This will consist of removing trash. This is incredibly important to help mitigate floods. These activities are labor intensive tasks so we need able-bodied volunteers. If you don't consider yourself able-bodied but want to help in some way you might consider donating snacks or lunch items to feed the volunteers. Whatever way you choose to assist, our meeting place is a large, dirt lot at the corner of Santiago Canyon Road and Modjeska Canyon Road. Make the turn onto Modjeska and the lot is immediately on your right. If any individuals wish to help we encourage you to wear a hat, sunscreen, long sleeves, long pants, sturdy shoes and work gloves. If they have shovels, please bring them with the name clearly indicated. This activity is on-going. lesliepaskus@aol.com Leslie Paskus Amador Inter-Canyon League Fire Recovery Group sil-mod.org

Saturdays, 11pm-2am, Santa Ana:  The Lights On Program is an amazing fully volunteer-run effort, offering warmth, caring & resources to those being released from incarceration. Conceived by the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, the program endeavors to help these men & women successfully re-enter society by meeting their immediate basic needs & connecting them to intervention & prevention programs to reduce further offenses. Volunteers man an RV, located across from the Intake & Release Center of the Santa Ana Jail. Volunteers are able to offer coffee, water, snacks, clothing, & the use of their cell phone, all provided free of charge. The RV also supplies free printed resources providing a comprehensive list of shelters, sober living homes, job programs, legal aid services & more to help them towards self-sufficiency. Oftentimes, once they are released from custody, they have no money for phone calls or bus fare. This program offers an immediate presence, a sort of safe haven for those men & women who often feel disoriented during the critical post-release period.
