It was a good week for… Cinemas are still packing them in, with Barbie and Oppenheimer as well as a slew of other titles (see below for Talk To Me among others) keeping the flow going…

It’s been a bad week for… those strikes in the US aren’t going away quickly…

We’ve been watching… our biggest cinema trip since the last newsletter was the rather wonderful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film Mutant Mayhem. It’s not only going to be one of the most successful in the long-running franchise, it’s definitely the best (and we speak from experience, having lived through every big and small screen iteration), although as noted on Twitter, we could almost hear former BBFC chief James Ferman turning in his grace at the inclusion of nunchucks and death stars in the first few minutes… Oh, and we also caught up with Oppenheimer too – wow…

It’s been a big week or two for deals, with a raft of ink being used on contracts on both sides of the Atlantic, one on retail in the UK and the other between two Hollywood powerhouses, with both impacting business here. First, in the north west of England, THG, formerly The Hut Group, is reported to have sold off Zavvi in what is essentially a management buyout to the entertainment retailer’s senior team of executives. The deal comes as part of THG’s restructuring which has come in the wake of a share price fall and some persistent negative reporting on its fortunes (The Times, among others, seems to have some kind of editorial vendetta it’s been pursuing against THG running back for some months). The deal has been financed by Gordon Brothers, a “retail advisory and investment” firm. The newly indie Zavvi would continue to use THG’s logistics, this time as a client, according to Sky. According to Sky, the deal takes in THG’s OnDemand division, which also takes in I Want One Of Those, a gifting website, and Pop in a Box, which sells fast-moving consumer goods. Those with longer memories will remember that Zavvi was the name taken on at the end of the 2000s as the old Virgin Megastores disappeared and Richard Branson sold off his high street interest to a management buyout. Little more than a year later, on the back of the collapse of Entertainment UK and Woolworths, Zavvi slipped into administration. As  Zavvi’s bricks and mortar stores shuttered, The Hut Group stepped in to acquire the Zavvi name and website. Zavvi has since built its reputation as a specialist entertainment retailer, expanding into pop culture items, toys, apparel and more.

Meanwhile, in the US, toy giant Hasbro has agreed to sell eOne to Lionsgate in a deal worth around $500 million. It follows the toyco’s strategic review and decision to focus on its core properties, including Peppa Pig. The deal sees Lionsgate getting rights to the likes of the feature film version of Hasbro’s Monopoly, as well as eOne’s vast catalogue. The library includes feature films and more, taking in some 6,500 titles. These include the likes of 1917, Atomic Blonde, Green Book, Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Renegade and Designated Survivor. 1917 was eOne’s biggest ever UK hit, with the company growing in the UK following its successive acquisitions of first Contender and then Momentum. Lionsgate said the deal would enable to to further scale its operations in the UK and Canada. "The acquisition of eOne checks off all the boxes in areas that play to our core strengths," said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer.  "It will be immediately and highly accretive, adds a world-class library with thousands of properties, strengthens our scripted and unscripted television business and continues to expand our presence in Canada and the UK.  The deal is the culmination of our long-standing relationship with the immensely talented team at eOne, and it continues to build our position as one of the world's leading independent content platforms with a stockpile of great intellectual properties and a unique, non-replicable portfolio of assets." “This sale fully aligns with our strategy, and we are pleased to bring the process to a successful close,” said Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks. “Lionsgate’s management team is experienced in entertainment and adept at driving value, and we’re glad to have found such a good home for our eOne film & TV business. We look forward to partnering with them, especially on a movie adaptation of Monopoly.”

More big news comes on the distribution side, as new partners Utopia Distribution Services (which acquired the Proper group and Cinram, the latter last year) and supply chain experts DP World have announced details of the UK’s biggest distribution warehouse for physical video and music which is due to open at the end of August. The mammoth 25,000 sq ft operation in Bicester will have the capacity to handle up to 250,000 units a day during peak periods, aided by more than 80 state of the art robots. It is expected to ship more than 30 million units a year to the UK and beyond, and will handle 35 per cent of the video market and 70 per cent of music – more than half of all home entertainment in the UK. The joint venture’s announcement was keen to state the importance of physical media, noting: “The new site has been created to meet ongoing demand for physical and video and music. The UK's home entertainment market, saw its 10th consecutive year of revenue growth in 2022. Physical video retail grew to £209m, with sales of Blu-ray and Blu-ray 4k UHD now over 40 per cent of the total market (ERA). Best selling DVDs included Top Gun: Maverick, which shipped more than 300,000 physical units last year, and Spiderman: No Way Home, which accrued more than 915,000 sales in ownership formats – a combination of DVD, Blu-Ray, as well as Electronic Sell-through.” Utopia is exiting its Aylesbury facility, shuttering on August 9, with a two-week pause in business ahead of the end of August opening.

Comment on the new Utopia and DP World site came from the companies and trade organisations. Drew Hill, MD Utopia Distribution Services and VP Distribution Services, Utopia Music, said: “We’re pleased to be working closely with DP World on a smooth transition to our brand new state-of-the-art facility. With UDS distributing for over 50 per cent of the UK’s combined music and video market, our investment in this infrastructure marks a bright and exciting future for physical entertainment.” Jonathan Himsworth, VP sales at DP World Logistics, added: “DP World brings together an unparalleled combination of assets and expertise to build creative solutions to the hardest problems in logistics, and this is why so many of the world’s largest and most recognisable brands trust us to deliver on their supply chain needs. To this end, we are very excited about working with Utopia to support the renaissance of physical music in the UK.” Liz Bales, CEO, British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE), added: “Physical formats are such an important part of Home Entertainment, so it’s fantastic to see this continued investment in an area of the business that has served consumers so well for so long, allowing them to own and keep the shows and films that they love. The exceptional value of DVDs, as well as the superior at-home experience of 4K UHD, supports the ongoing appetite for these formats with audiences. We look forward to working together in the future.” BPI chief strategy officer, Sophie Jones, commented: “Demand for albums on vinyl just keeps growing, while there are positive signs the long-term decline in CD purchasing is slowing and starting to bottom out.  Both formats support a strong and healthy physical sector that plays an important role in the UK’s vibrant music economy led by streaming.  This huge new warehouse and the investment it represents makes a welcome commitment to British music’s infrastructure and channels of distribution that will help to sustain the growth in demand for music on physical format for the foreseeable future and beyond.” Kim Bayley, CEO of the Digital Entertainment And Retail Association (ERA), said: “CD, vinyl and DVD are still a vital part of the entertainment market. Moving over 50 per cent of the UK's music and video stock to a new warehouse was never going to be an easy task but ERA and its members applaud UDS for the tremendous effort which is going into the move. We look forward to a smooth transition and the benefits that this huge investment in the supply chain will bring.”

It's been a busy few days for Lionsgate, what with the acquisition of eOne as outlined above and in the UK, a big theatrical bow at cinemas for Joy Ride on Friday August 4 and, this Monday, August 7, an equally significant home entertainment release. Joy Ride is worth keeping an eye on, its earned itself some strong reviews and is a perfect comedy that takes in plenty of hot topics and a healthy dose of outrageous humour too. Comment on the film, backed by an impressive outdoor campaign (we’ve seen the posters all over the London underground this past week or two), Lionsgate’s Sophie Spraggs said: “On Friday we launched Adele Lim’s directorial debut Joy Ride exclusively in cinemas. From the producers of Bad Neighbours, and the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar® nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu. The hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery has been described as ‘Like Crazy Rich Asians meets Pitch Perfect with a dash of Bridesmaids’ by critics.”

Meanwhile, the Monday release is of the much-talked about film adaptation of bestselling book Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, with the titlefollowing hot on the heels of a similarly acclaimed theatrical bow. Lionsgate’s Sophie Fawcett said: “On Monday we release the long awaited film adaptation of Judy Blume’s bestselling, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. on DVD and Blu-ray. We have had a brilliant reaction to the film from audiences and press alike, with it receiving 5 stars over it’s theatrical release, with many calling the film ‘charming’ and a ‘delight’. The film has been available to purchase on EST since July 18, and will also be available to rent this Monday.”

Another title, like Joy Ride, currently at cinemas and worth keeping an eye on is Altitude’s Talk To Me. We’ve yet to catch up with it (expect more on the next newsletter as we’re off to see it this week), but the years best reviewed horror film thus far got off to an absolute flier. Its first weekend drew in more than £640,000, making it the independent’s biggest ever opening weekend, with the title since going on to amass some £1.4 million and counting, making it a cert for home entertainment. And it should have a long shelf-life too – US genre production powerhouse A24 has announced plans for a sequel, meaning plenty of further drafting opportunities down the line. Lia Devlin, MD of distribution at Altitude commented, “The audience response to TALK TO ME across the UK and Ireland has been fantastic and we’re over the moon for Danny and Michael with how it has connected here and around the world.  Since picking up the film in Cannes last year, we’ve known how atmospheric, smart and entertaining the film is and alongside the consistent 4-star reviews, that’s playing out in cinemas right now. We are excited to see where word-of-mouth will take it.”

With Oppenheimer still dominating at cinemas, Christopher Nolan has proved himself to be a director whose stock shows no sign of diminishing and this should a brace of titles due from 101 Films shortly, as it brings some of the helmer’s earlier works to home entertainment in all-singing, all-dancing editions. First out of the gate is Following, Nolan’s first film which is getting its first ever Blu-ray release in the UK courtesy of 101’s Black Label imprint. It’s being given the kind of treatment the label is noted for and is now arriving on September 11 after a delay to get the release 100 per cent right. The company’s Tim Scaping said: “With Oppenheimer exploding on to the big screen, we're delighted to be bringing his debut feature FOLLOWING to UK Blu-ray for the first time. Released in 1998, the London set neo-noir was shot with no budget for one day a week over the course of a year, and employs Nolan's now trademark nonlinear structure. Released on our Black Label imprint, the disc is absolutely crammed with special features.  We were able to gain an incredible level of access to the filmmakers, with Christopher Nolan directly involved with the project. In addition to a new interview with the director, the release features interviews with producer Emma Thomas, star Jeremy Theobald, regular collaborator Jonathan Nolan, and many more. The lead actors even revisited the Covent Garden locations to create an entertaining short. With newly commissioned artwork, a booklet with new writing about the film and early Nolan short film 'Doodlebug' included this is the definitive release of the debut feature from one of modern cinema's greatest visionaries.”

This is followed two weeks later, on September 25, with the release of Memento, the Guy Pearce starrer that catapulted Christopher Nolan to international fame. This too comes complete with a raft of extras and again under the banner of the Black Label, which, now up to its 31st release from 101 Films, is as good a guarantee of quality as any of the key boutique labels. 101’s Tim Scaping, again, said: “Hot on the heels of Following we're releasing Christopher Nolan's early breakthrough, Memento. Nolan's landmark mind-bending thriller was released to universal acclaim and has since gone on to become a cult classic. Again the release features new interviews with the filmmakers, including the director, as well a stunning package with a SteelBook packaged in a rigid box with beautiful new artwork and prop replicas."

While we’re on 101 Films, the company is also represented at this year’s FrightFest, using the five-day horror fest held over the August bank holiday weekend as the perfect platform to launch a title on to the wider unsuspecting world. The film in question is Piper, which stars celebrity Elizabeth Hurley making a foray into genre territory in a tale of a mum who flees to German with her daughter only for dark secrets to emerge and a demonic force, the Piper, attempting to seize kids to atone for their parents’ sins. 101’s Scaping said: “We're delighted to be able to be bringing Anthony Waller's Piper to FrightFest later in the month. As one of the world's leading genre film festivals it's the ideal venue for the World Premiere of a commercial yet terrifying film that sees Elizabeth Hurley effortlessly transition to the horror genre. We're hoping to release later in the year, but keep an eye on our social media channels for confirmation."

More releases in stores this week and director Ruben Östlund already has the not one but two Cannes Palme d’Or awards under his belt and he has now added another major accolade too, in the shape of a lavish box set from Curzon celebrating his work. What’s more, if the independent says it’s one of the best packages it’s ever produced, then you know it must be good too. Ruben Östlund A Curzon Collection features six films, including his two Cannes winners, the most recent being the excellent Triangle Of Sadness (one of our favourite films of the past few years) alongside a raft of extras and bells and whistles, including a game developed by the director and Curzon for his fans to play. As Curzon’s Damien Spandley noted: “We're excited to release the first ever boxset that brings together two-time Palme d'Or winner Ruben Östlund's full catalogue. Our limited edition of 1,000 numbered units is probably our most beautifully designed boxset yet, including all six films from the great director, art cards and a special gift of which we're especially proud. If they dare, customers will enjoy Östlund's Ordinary Disasters, an original adult party game - designed in collaboration with Ruben - that's dark, hilarious and sure to test relationships in any household.”

Squaring the Circle, which landed in stores on Monday, is the acclaimed documentary from photographer turned director Anton Corbijn, who has excelled both with documentaries and features. This time he is turning his attention to legendary design studio Hipgnosis for the doc. Using new interviews and archive footage, it tells the story of the company that changed the shape – and certainly the look – of music with a raft of brilliantly designed album covers for the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney. Set up by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Po Powell, it defined the 70s and beyond, with Corbijn's interviews with the likes of Pink Floyd outlining just how they got a giant inflatable pig floating over Battersea Power Station for the seminal Floyd album sleeve and more. Doc specialist Dogwoof has pulled out all the stop's for Monday's Blu-ray release, with a deluxe package including a collector's booklet. What's more, it arrives with a wealth of publicity and strong reviews from the recent theatrical release.

The BFI has just given fans of its ever-varied releases an early Christmas present after unveiling its slate of home entertainment releases for the fourth quarter, which include at least one bona fide seasonal hit. Q4 always presents several opportunities for BFI to broaden the home entertainment slate and 2023 is no exception. Fans of our popular Flipside label have waited patiently for the third instalment in our Short Sharp Shocks collection which continues the mission to curate an alternative Brit-screen history of overlooked strange, striking, horrific and eerie eccentric rarities. Also in October we'll bring three new restorations of Yosujiro Ozu's classics (Hen in the Wind, Dragnet Girl and Record of Tenement Gentleman) to Blu-ray. The two-disc collection will coincide with the highly anticipated season at BFI Southbank which celebrates the 120th anniversary of Ozu's birth. In November our customers can discover a 'lost' masterpiece from acclaimed director Michael Powell with a stunning adaptation of Bela Bartok's expressionist opera, Bluebeard's Castle. Unavailable for many years, Bluebeard's Castle has been painstakingly restored by the BFI National Archive on its 60th Anniversary and will be presented in both its original broadcast format and the revised 1978 edition. Following the huge success of its predecessor last year we are delighted to announce the three-disc release of Ghost Stories for Christmas: Volume 2. This much-requested follow-up presents five more festive landmarks for Blu-ray, having been newly remastered by the BFI from original film materials. In the first 24 hours since listing the set has stormed to the top of Amazon's Box Set, Horror and Blu-ray charts. And rounding off the year for BFI's Home Entertainment slate is the fifteenth (yes, fifteenth!) and final volume in our British Transport Films collection with a two-disc collection called Life On The Line. There really is a stocking filler for everyone - we hope you enjoy!"

A couple of major product announcements from the indie sector now, with a couple of months’ worth of releases from Eureka and its Masters of Cinema imprint and more, as well as October from the company too. First September, here’s the company’s national accounts manager Marcis Garwood on its slate, saying: “September; A month when traditionally the nights start drawing in. Not to worry though as we've got your evening's home entertainment sorted here at Eureka with three superb releases; each of which visits a different genre, so there's something for everyone here. Comedy first as we present the 1983 cult gem Valley Girl. Starring Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage in his first major role. Valley Girl is an engaging rom-com with its feet firmly set in the Eighties. It's the film's 40th Anniversary and it makes its UK home video debut here on Blu-ray from a 4K scan of the original negatives. Driven along by a superb soundtrack including Culture Club, The Jam, The Clash, The Psychedelic Furs and Sparks (among others) the nostalgia runs high on this one. The release is encased in a limited edition hardbound slipcase featuring new artwork by Sam Gilbey and also includes a limited edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Craig Ian Mann. Disc extras include an audio commentary with director Martha Coolidge and a new interview with Deborah Foreman. Crime drama next and we are very excited to be welcoming the 4K (2160p) Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation of Orson Welles’ 1958 Touch Of Evil to The Masters Of Cinema Series. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made with a stellar acting lineup including Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh and  Welles himself. Touch Of Evil is a picture whose moral, sexual, racial, and aesthetic attitudes remain so radical as to cross borders established not only in 1958, but in the present age also. The release sn encased in a limited edition hardcase featuring stunning artwork by Tony Stella. Inside there is also a limited edition 100-page book featuring Welles, François Truffaut, André Bazin, and Terry Comito; interview excerpts with Welles; a timeline of the film’s history; two new essays by critic Richard Combs; and rare stills and imagery. Disc extras are extensive, including 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentations of all three versions, presented in Dolby Vision HDR: the theatrical version (95 mins), the preview version (109 mins), and the 1998 reconstruction (110 mins), new video interview with critic, broadcaster and cultural historian Matthew Sweet, new video interview with critic Tim Robey, new video interview with author and critic Kim Newman. Pre-ordering of this one will be fierce as it’s an absolute essential for any film fan. Our third release for September dials up the action / fight dial to 10 with 1990's She Shoots Straight. Directed by Corey Yuen and  starring Joyce Godenzi and Sammo Hung, She Shoots Straight is another slice of top-tier Hong Kong action, newly restored in 2K and making its UK debut on Blu-ray. Disc extras include brand new feature length audio commentary by Asian film expert Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival) and action cinema experts Mike Leeder and Arne Venema. The release is presented in a limited edition O-Card slipcase featuring new artwork by Darren Wheeling and also includes a limited edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing by James Oliver."

On to October and more from Eureka, again with Marcus Garwood talking us through the company’s slate. He said: “It's all sex, spoof and swords this October here at Eureka. That's quite a trio; so while I have your full attention let me take you through the three  gems we have lined up. Sex first, so to kick things off we quite literally open Pandora's Box with G. W. Pabst's 1929 film of the same name. Largely condemned and censored upon its initial release for its daring treatment of sexuality and female desire, Pandora's Box stars 22 year-old Louise Brooks, who; with her fragile beauty and iconic dark bob hairstyle, gives a performance decades ahead of its time and immortalised her as an icon. The film appears on our Masters Of Cinema imprint in a new restoration on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK. The release comes encased in a limited edition hardcase featuring artwork by Tony Stella. Disc extras include a new audio commentary by critic Pamela Hutchinson, new visual appreciation by author and critic Kat Ellinger, new video essay by Fiona Watson. The set is completed with a limited edition 60-page book featuring new writing on the film by critics and more. Spoof next with Stephen Chow and Lee Lik-chi's 1994 action comedy From Beijing With Love. As the title suggests this is a spoof based around the James Bond franchise where Martini swilling butcher (and disgraced former spy) Ling Ling Chat is dispatched to recover a stolen dinosaur skull from a golden-gun wielding supervillain. Equipped with the latest gadgets, our hero dons his tuxedo and swaggers into a world of danger, beautiful women, and metal mouthed assassins. It’s the film’s UK debut here in the UK on Blu-ray and the initial limited edition run features an O-card slipcase featuring new artwork by Grégory Sacré (Gokaiju), plus a collector’s booklet. Swords round off the month as Kung Fu film innovator Jimmy Wang Yu (The Chinese Boxer) blends wuxia mayhem with Seven Samurai in his 1973 film Beach Of The War Gods. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary Beach Of The War Gods is an action-packed Hong Kong swordplay adventure where a wandering swordsman (played by Jimmy Wang Yu) rallies three fighters to help lead the men of a Chinese beach town in battle against the invading Japanese. The release comes with a Limited Edition O-Card slipcase featuring new artwork by Tony Stella, plus a limited edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing by James Oliver and a review of the film by Dr Craig D. Reid from his book The Ultimate Guide to Martial Arts Movies of the 1970s. Disc extras include Brand new feature length audio commentary by Asian film expert Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival), Brand new interview with action cinema experts Mike Leeder and Arne Venema on the life and career of Jimmy Wang Yu.”

Also within the boutique labels world, the most recent entrant, Radiance, is positively thriving, with further announcements, this time for November, as well as continuing to partner with other labels to help them bring titles to market, using its knowledge to help companies enter the market. Here’s Radiance’s Fran Simeoni on its next titles, he said: “We're delighted with the response to our latest releases. Piotr Szulkin was a brilliant Polish director making sci-fi parables that sit somewhere between Gililam's Brazil and Tarkovsky's Stalker and with the eye-catching artwork by Polish poster designer Andrzej Pagowski fans have flocked to this release. In addition we announced Alain Cavalier's (our second from him) French New Wave love triangle noir Le combat dans l'ile with its stellar cast, narrative focused on bourgeois attack and rumination on sex and violence fans are equally taken with with this classic. Finally we have the second in our releases in collaboration with Raro, Umberto Lenzi's explosive Italian crime thriller. One of a handful of our hosted labels, this is a unique partnership in that Radiance is doing a lot of the production work, bonus content creation and marketing for the Italian imprint, an offering that will be expanded upon with another label soon…"

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment marked the passing of International Spider-Man Day this week - yes, that is an actual thing - not just by releasing the latest animated adventure of the web-slinging superhero Across The Spider-verse on digital, but also by launching a major photography competition. It has teamed up with the Museum Of Youth Culture for the Friendly Neighbourhood competition, with the winning entrant not only seeing their work enter the museum’s archive, but also earning themselves a Sony Electronics tech bundle. The announcement said: “he Museum of Youth Culture - which is dedicated to the styles, sounds and social movements innovated by young Brits over the last 100 years - is asking young people across the country to submit a photograph which celebrates their local community. In SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER:VERSE, Miles Morales’ heritage, neighbourhood and community are at the heart of his identity and the source of his strength. This inspiring photography challenge aims to celebrate the diversity of communities in Britain and the impact young people have on them.”

Kaleidoscope has announced it has picked up a trio of new titles, with all three due on its Icon Film Channel before assorted theatrical or physical and digital home entertainment. The first, Daliland, stars Sir Ben Kingsley as the surrealist Salvador Dali and will go on the subscription channel in September, followed across the next two months by cinema and HE. RoboDoc - The Creation Of Robocop - is a series charting the history of the sci-fI classic, with episodes dropping weekly from October and physical at the end of December, while another genre doc, the feature Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story, profiling the horror legend, will appear at the start of October ahead of physical media on November 6. COO of Kaleidoscope, Adam Sergeant, said: “We’re delighted to announce this trio of high-calibre acquisitions for the Icon Film Channel. Dalíland is a true tour-de-force for one of the UK’s finest actors, and in RoboDoc and Hollywood Dreams, we uncover the fascinating behind-the-scenes stories of two of cinema’s most enduring franchises and characters. We can’t wait to bring all three titles to our growing UK IFC audience.”
