These last few issues of BPS in Focus have existed to a great extent because of the contributions from members. If the newsletter is to continue going through this lock down period, I am going to need contributions, so if you have anything you think other members would like to know about, such as special on-line events or exhibitions, photographic hints, tips and tricks, etc. please let me know at the usual address: bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk

Birdies!
Following my plea for newsletter content, Beryl Heaton sent the following:
Watch the Birdie!
I have a bird feeder hanging in our apple tree which I fill with sunflower hearts. This attracts gold finches and there are often several of them on there at once. This makes a pretty scene, but I have never been tempted to photograph it as it certainly isn't natural history. However,  I have been thinking about it lately as I have more time to spare and I decided it would be good to photograph to use as a birthday card for friends instead of the wildflower images I usually use.
I thought about setting it up using my 300m lens, but Danny intervened and pointed out, quite rightly that I would need to use the 400m lens. Fear struck me as I have rarely used this lens due to the weight. Danny then said I would need to use his tripod as he has a geared head on it instead of the ball head I have on mine. Oh dear, things are getting complicated. I thought this was going to be a simple exercise. Obviously, I would need the help of my technical assistant to carry this out.
We duly set it up with the remote cable going through the window. Thankfully it was warm and sunny. Hang on a minute, now it is too sunny. We shall have to wait until the sun goes round a bit. I saw what looked like a nice view with several birds on. I pressed the remote, but nothing happened. It turned out Danny had removed the card to test the results on the computer. The phrase 'Too many cooks' came to mind. Danny does have a way of keeping me on the straight and narrow. I tend to jump in with both feet and want to get the job done.

We now have some results. I realise they aren't perfect images, but I think my friends(Who are not photographers) will be pleased to receive them in the form of a greetings card.

Annual Projected Image Competition
This competition will go ahead - though not in the usual time-honoured fashion.
After discussion with the judge, Rosemary Wilman HonFRPS AFIAP BPE5*, we plan that the judges’ comments and awards will be at a meeting using the Zoom app, on the evening already scheduled for the competition - that is the 20 May. Further details regarding logging onto the on-line meeting will be circulated closer to the date - so watch this space.
The closing date for entries will remain as the 29 April, so you have nearly 3 weeks to prepare your entry, which should be plenty of time.
Rosemary has already judged two competitions in this way and has found it a useful way for clubs to keep their activities continuing in some manner at the present time.

Projected Image Competition Secretary

Annual Projected Image Competition.

This competition consists of the usual Club, Intermediate and Advanced levels and in addition, there is a Nature section which does not distinguish between Club, Intermediate and Advanced entrants but is open to all. Anyone wishing to enter the Nature section must indicate the entries with the appropriate identification (see rules below). Members may submit a maximum of 4 PI images. These must be numbered in the entrant’s preferred order, as all image 4s may be excluded if the total entry in a competition is excessive. In addition to the usual awards at each level, the judge is asked to select the Best Travel, People, Action, Landscape and Monochrome pictures from the whole entry (i.e. all levels). One or more of these awards may well go to an image that gains another award. The overall winner's trophy will be presented for the best image in each competition at the AGM. The trophy will be awarded for one of the 1st place images.

COMPETITIONS - RULES FOR ENTRIES
Projected Image Competitions – Rules for Entry
1 Send an email with your images as attachments to competitions@ bristolphoto.org.uk and put the name of the competition in the subject line. When your images have been checked you will receive an email with a detailed Submission Report. If you do not receive the Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
2 Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night and cannot be made by CD, flash drive or memory stick.
3 Images must not be greater than 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high, so note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1200 pixels high.
4 Send the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
5 The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
6 Name each file you enter in the following pattern:
1) 01, 02, 03, etc to show order of preference.
2) Underscore (not a hyphen).
3) Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain an underscore).
4) Underscore (not a hyphen).
5) Your Membership Number (If you do not know your number it can be found on your membership card or at the top of your weekly “BPS In Focus” newsletter).
6) W (Club); or X (Intermediates); or Z (Advanced); or Y (Nature) (this latter useable only for the annual PI competition) showing the level for the entry.
Note: there can only be two underscores in the file name, one on each side of the image title. Spaces are to be used only within the image title.
As an example: 01_Morning Light_50W.jpg where number 01 is your first choice for order of preference, the image title is “Morning Light”, your membership number is 50 and ‘W’, denotes your level. There is an underscore between your entry order choice and the title, and there is an underscore between the title and your membership details.
The following is an entry example for the annual PI competition and shows two entries (amongst the total four allowed) in the Nature section:
01_Duck_296Y.jpg, 02_Seascape_296Z.jpg, 03_Bird of Prey_296Y. jpg, 04_Volley_296Z.jpg.
7 Please be aware that the images are processed automatically. Once the e-mailed images have been loaded into the competition software it will reject unacceptable images. The most common reasons are for being oversize (but note that undersize images are accepted), and for image filenames that are not as specified above, for example the filename contains a space outside the image title. Rejected images are reported in the submission report that you will receive
8 The same specifications are to be used when you are submitting images for consideration for other competitions (such as the Inter Club). Although these images need a title and membership number, the sequence number, first underscore and class identifier are ignored and can be omitted. Be sure to put the competition name in the subject line of your email.

External Competitions
Some of you may have seen that the WCPF Inter-Club Print Competition has been cancelled. This is the ‘qualifier’ for the national PAGB competition that we won last year. Unfortunately the support from clubs and the logistics conspired against holding it this year.
Ordinarily, the top two clubs from this go forward to represent the WCPF. As last year’s winners we automatically qualify...  Not sure if other federations are pressing ahead with selection or what this means for the PAGB national competition – once I know I’ll let members know.
In the meantime, perhaps we could consider the Kingswood Salver. This is a print competition for a panel of 5 images (one image from each of five separate photographers). I cannot see that Bristol PS has entered in recent years, I may be wrong and no-doubt someone will correct me, either way, should we enter for 2020?  If anyone is interested, let me know, and give me some thoughts on what theme(s) we might chose to focus on. If you are looking for ideas, want to see previous winners or want to check out the rules, have a look on the WCPF website. http://www.wcpf.org.uk/pages/kingswood-salver-2020.php

Trumpet Blower's Corner
I'm not sure if anyone is still entering Salons: most salons, understandably, seem to be having issues getting judges together. I’m still awaiting results from the German International Photo Cup 2020 originally due in mid-March but now expected mid/late April. Cheltenham Salon should be around the same time too.
In the meantime, I did manage 25 acceptances in the NSPAK Circuit (Serbia & Montenegro) including one HM and 6 acceptances and one award in Lion City International (Singapore).
Mike Martin
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

For Sale
If you have anything to sell, or you're looking for something to buy, just let me know and I'll include it here. Please bear in mind, we only advertise items for BPS members.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note that before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter. If they are wrong, please visit the Members' Area of the BPS website where you can register any changes using the on-line form provided; this form can also be used for change of address, email etc.
