St Georges Day Awards

Congratulations to members of our Scouting family who have recently been announced in this year's St George's Day Awards list. A big thank you for all they have done to support Scouting here in our county over the years.

  • British Fencing Course - Learn to deliver fencing for scouts.
    DATE: 1st July 2017   
    TIMES: 0900hrs - 1700hrs    
    LOCATION: Bradley Wood Scout Activity Centre | Shepherds Thorn Lane | Brighouse | HD6 3TU
    COST: £30
    The course will allow Scout Leaders aged 18+ to safely deliver fencing with your Scout groups.
    Provides Scout Leaders with the knowledge, skills and attributes to effectively coach young people pre-planned sessions.
    Develops coaching skills and the technical & tactical aspects of defence and attack
    The course is strictly limited to 12 candidates, the first people returning form and money will be accepted.  If we get too many applicants I will look to put on another course later in the year.  As a Scouting county we will be buying Fencing equipment - foils, head gear and target vests which will allow you to deliver sessions. No previous experience is needed. Absolute beginners is the level it is aiming at !
    PLEASE NOTE YOU ARE COMMITTING TO THE FOLLOWING IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THE REDUCED PRICE:
    Deliver a minimum of 6 sessions of fencing (this does not have to be consecutive weeks).
    Target young people aged 11+.
    Complete the register that you will be provided with and return to British Fencing to be uploaded onto the British Fencing Monitoring and evaluation tool.

  • Blackbeard Sleepovers - See attached flyers
    Bradley Wood is running fully organised and prepared Beaver Sleepover’s, all you need to do is turn up. The sleepovers will have a full program already prepared with everything you need ready for you, including the food! With only 50 spaces available per night the Beavers will have the opportunity to get the full exciting experience, stopping in the Jubilee Centre at Bradley Wood, even getting the chance to meet Beavers from other colonies.
    Dates: Friday 8th – Saturday 9th September, Saturday 9th – Sunday 10th September, Friday 22nd – Saturday 23rd September, Saturday 23rd – Sunday 24th September
    The cost for the sleepover is £22 per child, this includes the building, camping fees, pop up tents, food, crafts and activities. If you need to borrow any roll mats or sleeping bags, just let us know.   • Survival Skills Camp - See Attached flyer for details - 14th -16th July Blackhills Campsite
     
  • Dragon Challenge - Sail your Viking longboat from challenge to challenge to become the Dragon Master and rule the seas! 
    In teams of 6-8 Cubs or Brownies you will compete in your pre-made longboat to get to as many challenges as possible and score as highly as you can on each one to try to become the Dragon Master. The challenges will test your teamwork, your bravery, your ingenuity and your speed - you need to be ready for anything! - See Attached flyer for more info.

  • The High Ropes Course runs on the weekend of the 22nd to 23rd April 2017. You will learn how to set up and rescue on the high ropes course, as well as being taught the skills to run each of the different elements with a group of Young People. It is desirable to be a competent climber before coming on the course, as basic climbing skills are not taught as part of this training. Ideally you will have either a leadership or personal permit climbing qualification.  The course is run by the West Yorkshire County Scout Climbing Team and costs £45 per person.

Community Impact Support Day – North East England Region – 13th May 2017  
As part of our Vision 2018 strategy we made a commitment to make a positive impact in our communities, embrace and contribute to social change and create active citizens. 
 
The Community Impact Group (a team of young people who provide the strategic lead for Community Impact  and are youth social action experts) are running a fun and informative support day on Saturday 13th May to help leaders, young leaders, managers, network members and commissioners across North East England to share practical ideas and assist with programme planning, build  knowledge, skills and confidence to make a real and lasting impact in their local communities.   These could be on an issue that young people feel passionate about in their local area or one of the national issues (A Million Hands).
 
By the end of the day participants will be able to:
  • Explain the principles of high quality Community Impact projects
  • Outline the importance of young people driving social change
  • Explain the methodology of running a Community Impact project and how to deliver within the 6-25 Programme
  • Be able to understand and identify what makes a great community impact project
  • Understand and access the support available
  • Agree an outline action plan
