Wednesday 13 September

Next week we welcome Viveca Koh FRPS FIPF back to BPS, when she will be presenting her talk, The Joy of Seeing. Viveca says this about her talk:

I began visiting derelict buildings in 2009, and was for a time quite an active member of the ‘UrbEx scene’, during which time I shot hundreds of photographs in various locations. In this talk I’ll be showing some of these previously unseen images, including a section of photos shot indoors in very low light, leading to very deep and dark shadows from which the lighter elements gently emerge.

I wouldn’t be me if there weren’t some photos shot on an iPhone, and there is a small series named ‘Café Life’ capturing candidly some of the customers I have observed over time. There is a collection of images shot in the ‘Miksang’ form of contemplative photography, a method I am very interested in and seem to naturally gravitate towards without even realising that what I was doing was ‘a thing’. It is about placing the mind’s attention without distraction to connect with what one sees deeply and intimately, and to express that with the camera simply and precisely. In the last part of the talk I will explain how I created some of my multi-layered photo composites in Photoshop.

Here are a few images to give you an idea of what to expect:

DI Group
DI Group (zoom) Meeting – Monday 11 September, 7.30 pm
Last month five speakers presented a wide range of images during the whole evening showing the work they enjoy creating and inspiring others at the same time.

Tim Barker: This is the first time I can think of that anyone from BPS has taken the opportunity to photograph at the Glastonbury festival. The size of the crowds and its reputation for mud baths is enough to put me off. However it is a rich ground for people photography and Tim showed some unique images from the festival including car henge, like the stone henge but with cars, something which I thought could only happen in America. He did not miss the main attraction, the musicians, which took a lot of patience in finding best spots for photographing. His other passion for wild life showed in the images of gannets at Bempton cliffs. It was fascinating to see their graceful behaviour in flight as well as their brutal squabbles among nesting birds.
Glastonbury 2023 - Tim Barker

John Hudson: John has found a wonderful way of photographing boat races out at sea and from a completely unusual angle – from the air. His experience in drone photography and research into how and where he can fly it is paying dividends. Instead of hiring a boat he can get close to the action and photograph the subjects with much less hassle sitting on the shore. As usual his images of flamenco dancers and musicians on stage which he presented were just extraordinary. His presentation also included his other favourite subject, wildlife and nature with a few colourful images of butterflies.

Ann Mead: Ann is another photographer with nature and wildlife as her passion. By coincidence her presentation was also of gannets but a bit different from Tim’s. She was at Bass Rock, the most significant home of gannets in UK. Although she also witnessed the behaviour of gannets flying in the air and aggression during nesting season she was in search of a portrait of a pair living in peace and harmony preparing for the next generation.
Bass Rock - Ann Mead

Colin Dixon: Colin revisited the mannequin graveyard with a model and recorded an amazing series of images of the brave model among the sea of limbs and torsos of discarded mannequins. The combination was quite surreal in some images and I am sure there are a few winners in there we may well see in future.

Rachel Domleo: Rachel presented some of her images from the club outing three weeks ago. She has a unique way of seeing things which has won her many of the club competitions. So it was not a surprise that she drifted off piste to capture some imaginative compositions in her usual creative style.

The next DI group meeting is on Monday 11 September. This meeting is still on zoom but it is hoped that next month, October, we may start meeting in the clubroom as a hybrid meeting as a trial. But don’t worry if you can’t come to the clubroom, you will still be able to participate by contributing your images for presentations on zoom and also talk to the members in the clubroom and other zoomers. To plan future meetings it is important to know your views and so it is vital that you submit the survey form quickly if you haven’t done it yet. The link to it is https://forms.office.com/e/3ximCyWPEE

The meeting is open to all BPS members. Please feel free to share your images with fellow members. It’s an opportunity to get a second opinion at the DI meeting from your fellow members or you might just enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere. You are free to ask questions on digital imaging.

When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish  Sunday 10 September. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Ashwin is far too polite to say anything about the poor response to his request in this newsletter last week, in which he asked members to fill out a short survey form to help him plan for the future of the DI Group. However, I'm not so quite so polite! Ashwin puts a lot of work into making sure that the DI Group runs smoothly and that attendees have interesting meetings, and has done so single handedly since 1997. It is a little disappointing, to say the least, when only eight of the regular DI attendees could be bothered to follow the link and answer a few "tick box" questions. If you attend the Group or have done in the past or even think you might in the future, please take just five minutes to complete the survey and help Ashwin plan for the future. The link to the survey is highlighted above. Ed.

Print Competition Closing Date - Advanced Warning
The closing date for the first print round of the new season is Wednesday, September 27 and there is a box awaiting your entries on the stage in Unit 13.

For new members, members venturing into prints for the first time and, dare I say it, established members who may wish a little reminder, here are a few pointers.

Club level entrants may submit a maximum of 3 prints in each round of the competition. Intermediate and Advanced entrants may submit a maximum of 2.  Prints awarded by the judge earn points.  Across the four rounds these points are accumulated. Trophies are presented in each of the 3 levels (Club, Intermediate, and Advanced) to the holders of the highest number of points at the end of the four rounds.

Prescribed Topic Challenge
For entrants at all levels, one of your 3 or 2 images may be submitted for an optional Prescribed topic challenge in each round. These will be judged together, regardless of the entrant’s level.  This entry must be identified by ticking the box on the print label.  Points gained for the Prescribed topic will also accrue to the entrant’s score at the appropriate level.
A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with an award for the winner at the end of the season.

You can download labels for your prints from the Members’ Portal on the website.  To find the current labels for prints, either go to Competition Closing Dates and find the download links at the foot of the list or go to Competition Rules & Info -> General Guide For Entrants and find the same links there.

It’s also important that you supply a digital copy of each print you enter.  This should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there will be no need to give any other information than your name and the title.   You don’t need to add your membership number or level of entry.  Please upload the digital copies of your prints via this link: bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload

The judge for Round 1 of the print competition will be John Tilsley APAGB, DPAGB, ARPS and the optional Prescribed topic for this round is Water.

Let’s hope for a great start to the print competition year!  Please contact me at printcompetitions@bristolphoto.org.uk if you have any questions or problems.

David Alderson
Print Competition Secretary

RPS News - Western Region
Contemporary Travel Photography; what is it? Sunday 10 Sept.
Guest Speaker Chris Hilton 10:30 a.m. ~ 12:30 p.m.

To begin with, perhaps it’s easier to say what it’s not:
It's not about sunsets, selfies or social media likes, and much more to do with disco dancing and Degas than you might have found possible. The talk covers travels through Iceland, Morocco, South East Asia and Uzbekistan, home of the Silk Road. We will also travel in time to 1970’s America, turn of the century France and 1830’s Japan. But the real trip will be through Chris’ thought process so hold onto your seats as it can get a little odd in there!

Free to RPS Members; £3.00 non-members.

Future Meeting
On 20 March next year, we have Jeanette Lendon visiting to talk about SmartPhone photography and how we can extract the best from our mobile devices. To follow this up, she has offered to stay over in Bristol and lead a “SmartPhone Safari” the next day (Thursday 21 March) to practice and develop some of the skills and practices she covers in her talk. The cost would be approx. £30 each depending on numbers interested. If this is something that you might be interested in, please can you let Jay know to see if we have enough interest to make it worth while her doing it.

Cheers

Jay
