From the Church Guy
"Advent" is an old Latin church word, and it means "Don't go crazy!"

OK, maybe that's not quite accurate.  But the season of Advent, which leads up to Christmas, SHOULD be a message to us not to go nuts with all the craziness in our culture around Christmas.  Our culture wants us to buy too much, eat too much, and schedule too much.

So when you hear the word "Advent," think "Don't go crazy!"  Give yourself an early Christmas gift:  some time for quiet.  Stay cool.  Keep it slow.

And if you do, you just might find extra meaning and joy in the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.

Lock in Our Youth
We're having another overnight in the church for the youth group.  Led by Father Mark and Eric & Sabrina Laine, the youth fellowship is made up of our 7th-12th graders.  On Friday, December 5, we'll gather at 7:00 p.m.  Kids are to bring snacks to share, a sleeping bag and pillow, and toiletries.  We'll finish in the morning at 8:30.  It's always a good time!

 Calling New Bakers!
Would you like to learn to bake our popular Sunday communion bread?  Some of our bakers have retired, and we'd be happy to have some new bakers.  Paula Giroux is the leader of our bakers' guild, and would be happy to give you the recipe for you to try.  Our four current bakers (Paula, Laura Chestnut, Trina Cooney, and Theresa Brom) would be glad for your help.  Talk to Father Mark or to Paula herself (648-2365).  The people of St. Mark's would thank you!

 St. Mark's Table, Christmas Edition
Our December St. Mark's Table is a tradition hosted by Father Mark and his wife Paula.  The first part is as usual -- we'll gather in the undercroft at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16 for a potluck meal (bring a dish to share and your own place setting).  But after we eat together, we will adjourn to the sanctuary upstairs where Father Mark will lead the singing of Christmas carols from our hymnal, accompanied by Paula at the organ.  Come eat, and come and adore the Christ Child!

 Christmas Services at St. Mark's
CHRISTMAS EVE: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24

4:00 p.m. Children's Eucharist
This service is designed to be especially child-friendly, but of course people of all ages are welcome.  It lasts 40 minutes or less, but does include Eucharist, or Holy Communion.  The service begins with Father Mark leading simple songs, and telling the story of the first Christmas, with the children in the congregation providing the sound effects.

7:00 p.m. - Candlelit Eucharist
This service is a full celebration of the Eucharist, with the lovely custom of lighting candles at the end of the service as we sing "Silent Night."

10:00 p.m. - Eucharist with Choir and Candles
This service is a full celebration of the Eucharist, with our choir leading us in the music, and the lighting of candles at the end of the service as we sing "Silent Night."

CHRISTMAS DAY: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25

9:00 a.m. - Christmas Eucharist
This service follows the old English custom of a worship service on Christmas morning.  While there is no music, it is a full celebration of the Eucharist, and is especially helpful to people who do not wish to drive in the hours of darkness.

 Church School
We have begun practicing this year's Christmas pageant, HAY! A Stable Experience, which will be on Sunday, December 21, during  the second service.  Rehearsals will be on Sunday mornings, so children wishing to be in the pageant need to be here.  We will also have rehearsals on Saturday, December 13 and 20 at 9:30 a.m.

St. Mark's Book Club's
Our latest read was THE LIAR'S CLUB by Mary Karr, a dark, sassy, disturbing tale...it's the story of an unconventional, spirited childhood, and of parents whose love for their children was fierce and enduring, but desperately flawed.

An Opportunity for Young Musicians
St. Mark's is offering young musicians the opportunity to share their musical talent(s) at the 10 o'clock service.  Participants must study with a private and/or school music teacher who provides instruction to students at an individual lesson or small group setting.  Participants must select a piece/song appropriate for a church setting; please see Mrs. Ferranti with any ideas or questions.
