Wednesday 16th marks the beginning of the 2013-2014 Print Competition season with Round 1 being judged by Peter Gennard MFIAP, EFIAP/p. Peter is a well known judge on both the national and international circuits, so is well placed to cast a critical eye over our pictures. To give you some idea as to what makes Peter tick (photographically) please click here to see a gallery of his work.

Ashwin is away sunning himself in India at the moment, so next Monday's meeting is being chaired by Mike Salter. As usual, all are welcome, and a special invitation is thrown out to newer members who haven't been along before. The evenings take the form of an informal meeting when members bring along work, either prints or projected images (jpegs on a memory stick please) for general discussion, advice or just to show off!
Ashwin assures me that he has secreted away some biscuits especially for the evening, so you shouldn't go home hungry!

This Week's Star Picture!
|
In the absence of images from other members, I'm reduced to reproducing one of my pictures this week. This was one of two images I had accepted in the recent South Devon International.
"Bath with a View"
Unless members send me images for this august publication its going to become rather boring. So please, if you have a picture that you reckon others might like to look at (it doesn't have to have won anything, you just need to like it) send it to me and I'll print it here.

BPS Member's Exhibition At The RPS
|
I have received the following from club member David Cooke.
BPS member, Dr David F Cooke ARPS EFIAP has an exhibition of his work throughout October at Fenton House, the Royal Photographic Society Headquarters in Bath. Called ‘Moments in Life’, it features many of his internationally accepted and award winning images. The exhibition contains 31 images and is on throughout October.
For the last few years, David’s aim has been to produce candid images with an artistic flair and to experiment more with digital manipulation to help produce the feel that he wants in them. He says, ‘I try to make images which could be considered to be ‘Visual Art’. Although essentially, it is ‘street photography’, I want my work to be more than a record of existence and activity and to have a sense of a story; not to spell it out but to make the viewer wonder what the story is and let them interpret it as they will’.

Frome Wessex Camera Club are holding their annual National Open Salon of Photography. The exhibition is open to all UK photographers and has 4 classes: Open, Nature, Scapes (sic) and Monochrome. The closing date is 31 October and you can find full details and on-line entry by visiting their website. This web page will also show you a photograph of several ne'er-do-wells who look as if they ought to be starring on Crimewatch rather than posing as last year's judges!

Society member, Nicky Williams, has emailed me about a forthcoming photographic event, IN COMMON, which is being held at the Empire Theatre in Old Market on 17 October. The project comprises a series of activities based around the theme of community, from a series of free multimedia workshops to digitising family albums and photo-shoot day, this event is a celebration of the end of OLD MARKET DIARIES and they would like to invite the community to take part. For full details of the event, please visit their website by following this link.

It's that name again! Val Duncan has recently been adding to her tally of gongs & ribbons with successes both at home and abroad. Val amassed a haul of 3 Ribbons and 2 Gold medals at the Shrewsbury Open Photography Exhibition and a couple of Ribbons and a Gold medal in the 2013 Finland Circuit. Quite what she does with all these ribbons defeats me, I reckon her sideboard must look like something akin to a pony club hall of fame! In addition to this, Val has now gained her BPE3* award and Greg his 2*; congratulations to both - now pull your finger out, Greg, you have the honour of us chaps to uphold, don't let she who must be obeyed beat you!
A couple of weeks back, I included a list of the BPS members who had been successful in the recent Northern Counties International Exhibition - I have been severely admonished for omitting the name of Gordon Bunney from the list; Gordon in fact had an acceptance with a colour print called "Passing"; well done Gordon, it's good to see yet another BPS member adding their name to the list of successful international exhibitors within our midst.
If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
