Projected Image Competition - Round 1
|
As next week's meeting is the evening outing, Ken Clarke would like to remind you that after a brief holiday the competition season starts again. Competitions give all club members, from basic to advanced photographers, the chance both to show the best of their work and see how that compares with others. There are no Olympic gold medals or Oscars, only glory and silver cups to the winners - so have a go!
The first competition is Round 1 of the Projected Image Bi-Monthly Competition with the entry deadline just two weeks away on 7 September, the judge for this round will be Tony Byram ARPS DPAGB AFIAP AWPF.
Full details of entry rules, file formats/names and how to submit your entries can be found on pages 22-28 of your 2016-2017 BPS Handbook.

Shock Horror - A Happy Ending
|
Following last week's shock disclosure that the Membership Secretary had actually taken a picture, members will be relieved to learn that post event therapy has been successful and that the camera has now been put back in the bag and returned to the bottom of the cupboard. All's well that ends well, eh!

BPS Member Represents England

The PAGB was second with a Gold Medal in the 2016 FIAP Nature Projected Biennial Competition. This is, in effect, the World Cup or Jules Rimet Trophy of nature photography with each country having a "team" of 20 images. One of the 20 images picked to represent the PAGB and England was by our own Keith Wood and is of a Long-billed Curlew with Crab.
Here is a link to further details and the full results.

The BPS walls are resplendent with an exhibition of prints by long-standing member and former President Bob Faris. Bob is one of the longest serving members of the Society, having joined in 1972. He has delved deep into his archive and come up with a personal retrospective of his distinguished and continuing photographic career. As many of you who were at this week's meeting will have seen, this an exhibition of work that should not be missed.

I have received the following from BPS member, Tony Byram:
Continuing the successful trips to Venice for Carnival over many years I will be organising a trip in 2017, but the format will be a little different to previous trips.
The trip will start at the hotel in Venice (La Locandiera) at 17:30 on Sunday Feb 19 and end on Saturday Feb 25 after breakfast. Travel arrangements will not be included, but advice/help with these will be available. As this is not included any costs would be payable separately. La Locandiera is very well located as the Lagoon and St Mark's Square (Piazza san Marco) are just a few minutes walk away.
The cost per person in a double/twin room will be in the region of £750, depending on where the £/€ rate is when bills have to be paid. This is for 5 nights on a Bed & Breakfast basis at La Locandiera and includes a Welcome Meeting – with a glass or two of Prosecco and frittelli (Venetian Carnival cakes). Following this there will be a group meal with drinks at a local Trattoria. During the week there will also be a Guided Walk led by an expert Venetian Guide.
During the week there will be plenty of opportunities to photograph Masked Carnival Figures and, especially if you've not been to Venice before, one of us will be on hand to help you to orient yourself around Venice. There will also be a chance to visit a small mask workshop near the Rialto Bridge.
If you are interested or would like more information you can contact me by email at tonyphoto@blueyonder.co.uk or by phone on 0117 956 1896 or at BPS.

A few things to put in your diary for the weeks ahead:
Dorset Independent Photographers are going to whisk their audience away on a world tour from the snowstorms of Iceland to the heat of Cuba at their Annual Exhibition at Gardens House in Dorchester’s Borough Gardens from 22 - 29 August. The show, which has become a firm fixture in the Dorset arts calendar, features the work of six photographers, whose images also celebrate the beauty of the south-west in a variety of styles using traditional film and digital media in both monochrome and colour. The exhibition is open every day from 10am to 5pm. More details here.
ThunderCat Racing - This is a new event to this neck of the woods and is a very exciting form of powerboat racing using 4 metre inflatable catamarans all fitted with hugely powerful engines strapped to their rear ends. The racing takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend (27 - 28 August) and will run over a course based around Clevedon Pier. Full details can be found here.
Lawn Mower Racing - Fed up with those genteel Sunday afternoon flits around your lawn with the Flymo? If so, the place to be over the Bank Holiday weekend is just off the A38 at Lower Weare near Axbridge. This is a weekend to suit all, F1 lawnmowers, music, classic cars - and if none of that floats your boat, there is always the beer tent! For full details, please go to their website - www.mendipmowing.co.uk
Frampton Country Fair - This annual event is being held on 11 September at Frampton on Severn. This covers everything that you'd expect to find at a country fair from green wellies to an aerobatic display. Please visit their website for full details.
Colin Varndell - Sodbury & Yate Camera Club are hosting a special event on 12 September. They have invited the renowned landscape and wildlife photographer Colin Varndell to give one of his special talks. The event will be held at the Charter Suite at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall. Tickets (£5) can be obtained through tickets@sypc.org.uk or by ringing Eileen 01454 778882. More details here & here. |

A short while ago I mentioned that Greg Duncan had been doing rather well with his AVs. He has also been doing well with portfolios, having gained his BPSA (Bronze, Photographic Society of America) for a portfolio of 10 images. The following appeared in an article in the PSA Journal this month about this new distinction. Greg not only produced the images, he also composed the poem - what a clever blighter he is!.
To read the full article, follow this link and this one to read the whole poem.

Those of us having a fair bit to do with overseas exhibitions will have come across some pretty weird collections of words. Sue O'Connell recently received the following after she sent in a query:

If you have had some weird or wonderful responses, please let me know and I'll print them.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list. |
