Dr. Alfonsina Q. (Nina) Davies Epilepsy Foundation

                                                         March  2014
THE MISSION of the Dr. Alfonsina Q. Davies Epilepsy Foundation is to improve the lives of those afflicted through increased research efforts, a better treatment modality and the elimination of the stigma and prejudice that surrounds this disease in all facets of public life.
Donations to Endowed Chair reach over $875,000
This may sound like a lot of money, and it is.  However doing basic research in the cause and treatment of epilepsyis extremely expensive. As you read in our last newsletter the government gives very little to epilepsy even though it kills 50,000 Americans every year, as many as breast cancer.

Again we thank those of you who have helped us reach this milestone in our effort to fund the Dr. Alfonsina Q. Davies Endowed Chair for Research in Epilepsy.  It is imperative that we continue this effort. If all those who open this message would give a small donation, what a difference it would make to so many children and adults afflicted by this condition.

Our next target is $1,000,000.  We would like to raise the remaining $125,000 by December 31, 2013.  All donations to the foundation, directed to the chair, are tax deductible. Please donate and help the forgotten millions out there.  Donate

The Magic of Words.  They can make you or break you!
Congratulations to the Korean Epilepsy Community for their valient work in helping to remove or reduce the stigma of epilepsy in their country. Those who suffer seizures not only have to deal with the disease but also have to face daily discrimination, stigma and prejuice. The latter causes a psychosocial trauma which is seldom addressed.

The Korean name was officially changed to noi-jeon-jeung meaning cerebroelectric disorder.  This is the scientifically descriptive name that is neutral and carries no associations that would affect those with the illness.  The Hospital Authority of Hong Kong, China, successfully changed the name in 2010.

Formerly the Korean word for epilepsy had very negative connotations that supported the belief of many that the disease "was associated with religious experiences and even demonic possession". In most asian countries, "epilepsy" translated as "mad pig" or "madness".  In some cultures, persons with epilepsy have been banned from public buildings, not allowed to marry, imprisoned, or even sterilized. The United States in not exempt from such practices.    Source: Epilepsia, January 2014
