You may think that I bang on about keylines a bit too much, but having sat through last weekend's Salon judging I can tell you that a large number of images would have done a lot better had there been separation between the image and the dark background of the projection screen. This would have allowed the judges to see where the image stopped and the screen began, something that has also been mentioned by the last few judges to visit BPS. Those members who are a bit long in the tooth should be well aware of this, but some newer members may be less so.
Below are a couple of examples of images, with and without keylines, shown against a black background, typical of the way they would look against the black screen surround. Hopefully you can see the huge difference just adding a 3 pixel line around the outside of the image makes. |

JUDGING SEMINAR The WCPF is running very low on judges – many of our judging team have now retired and we are looking for new people to bring fresh eyes and enthusiasm! We held a very successful Judging Seminar in Bristol in November and have 7 new judges who are already getting bookings. They are based more to the north of the region so now we need new judges in the South and South West. The next Seminar will be held at The Judith Telfer Centre, Exmouth Community College on Saturday 22nd April, 9.30am-5pm. Please consider coming - I can vouch for the fact that you will learn so much about appreciating and enjoying photography, and should you decide to continue to the judging assessment in the afternoon, then you will become a very welcome member of the WCPF Judging team. You will have support and mentoring all the way. You don’t need qualifications or Distinctions – just a degree of self-confidence, the ability to speak to an audience and a love of photography. Please contact John Tilsley for more information: dijohn.tilsley@waitrose.com
MEMBER’S EXHIBITION IMPORTANT – The date of the opening and award presentation has changed to SUNDAY APRIL 30 with presentations at 2pm. This is to avoid a clash with Coronation Sunday which is the day for the street parties and community celebrations. The exhibition will now run for TWO weeks, not one. The venue remains Bovey Tracey Golf Centre. They are being very good to us – please support them by buying coffees and lunches! The closing day remains the same – Saturday 11 March with selection on 25/26 March. https://www.thewcpf.com/_files/ugd/87b3cd_c72fc38609fc4a48922fb938758c5939.pdf (opens a pdf document) We are hoping for lots of entries – and will be selecting for both the PAGB Inter Fed Print Competition and the WCPF Travelling Exhibition from the print entries – so we need plenty to choose from. If you want your club to be represented, please encourage your members to enter! |
- RWA Photo Open Exhibition 2023. Until 1 May. The RWA Photo Open celebrates contemporary photographic practice in all its forms. This Open Call exhibition invited submissions from artists and photographers, at any stage of their careers, who create photographic work or explore the nature of photography in their work. Often side-lined as a significant artform, the Photo Open aims to showcase the sheer quality and range of photographic work being produced by photographers and artists across the UK and abroad now. This exhibition is presented in association with Bristol Photo Festival. Full details HERE.
- The Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2022 exhibition is at M Shed in the City Docks until 29 May. For full details, click HERE

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help). |
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
