Hello Firstname

AGM - Wednesday 4 July
Next Wednesday, 4 July, is the highlight of the BPS calendar and the night you've all been waiting for - The AGM. This is your chance to hear what's going on behind the scenes at BPS and have your say (I can't promise you'll be heard, but I've got to persuade you to turn up somehow!).

The AGM will only take us up to the tea break; after that, we will have entertainment of a different sort, but again provided (in part) by you, the members. This will take the form of a competition of images taken at the Studio Group meetings over the last year with the audience voting to decide an eventual winner. This proved to be great fun last year and hopefully that success will be repeated.

2018-2019 Competition Rules
We’re grateful to everyone who responded to our request for feedback. All were in favour of keeping this feature of the competitions. So, for the Advanced level, the competitions will continue to be divided into an ‘open’ category and a ‘prescribed’ category. In each round, two submitted images can be in the ‘open’ category, the subject and style being your free choice. Your third image must suit the subject or style prescribed.
Here, to give you plenty of time to start planning your shots, are the prescribed images for 2018-2019:
PI COMP 2018-2019 PRINT COMP 2018-2019
Round 1 Letters Wood
Round 2 At Dusk/Night-time Dereliction/Decay
Round 3 A Song Title Circle(s)
Round 4 Christmas Reflection
One of these perhaps needs a little explanation: ‘A Song Title’ invites you to produce an image based on the title of an actual song and your image should be given that title – e.g. ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You’, ‘My Old Man’s A Dustman’ ….
We hope the others are self-explanatory and that they all provide room for your creative interpretation.
The new BPS Handbook and the website will give the full rules for all competitions.

DPI COMPETITIONS - IMAGE SIZE CHANGE
With the advent of the new club room projector, the size of the images for all projected image competitions will change. The image dimensions will change to a maximum of 1600x1200 pixels. This change is in line with other organisations, e.g. PAGB, and will come into effect in the new club year starting in September.
This should pose few problems, but there is one consequence for those perhaps less technically minded. Many may well have already prepared images held on file which are smaller than the planned new dimensions (for example the 1400x1050 presently used). You should be aware that simply resizing these smaller images by ‘inflating’ them to the new dimensions is to be avoided. Expanding images in this way usually leads to significant loss of image quality. Far better to return to the largest image available that you have processed and prepare a new image by reducing that to the new size for submission.

Studio Group Competition - Deadline Extended
The studio competition will be for images taken during any of the studio group meetings that have taken place in the 12 months ending 31 May 2018. Any member who has attended these sessions can submit up to four images which they should rank in order of their preference for being entered in the competition. The images should be sent in an email with 'Studio Competition' in the subject line to: competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk by midnight on Saturday 30 June and should follow the normal rules for projected image competitions i.e.:
1.  If you do not receive a Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
2. Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night and cannot be made by CD, flash drive or memory stick.
3. Please be aware that the images are handled automatically once loaded into the competition software and the software will reject incorrect images (too large or wrong naming pattern).
4.  Images must not be greater than 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high - Note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1050 pixels high.
5.  Save the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
6.  The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
7. Name each file you enter in the following pattern. For example: 01_Alexandrea_296S.jpg
•    01, 02, 03, etc. to show order of preference
•    underscore (not a hyphen)
•  Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain underscore)
•      underscore (not a hyphen)
•    Your Membership Number (shown on this newsletter) followed without a space by the letter S.
The images will be shown randomly in pairs following the AGM on the 4 July and all present will vote on them on a knockout basis until we have an overall winner who will be presented with the studio trophy.
If you’ve enjoyed a studio group meeting please support this new competition, it is a great chance both for the experienced members and for those new to competitions to try their hand.

Studio
The next Studio event will be an all day lighting masterclass on Friday 3 August, the model will be Tara Sumnera a full-time agency represented fashion model who has appeared in Elle magazine ,Vogue Italia, Fitnet magazine (front cover) and has worked with Channel 4

We will also have Darren Fellows who is the Technical Advisor and resident photographer for Rotolight who will bring the Rotolight selection of LED lights.

This should be a great day, the cost will be £30 to include the model and lunch Darren will demonstrate the lighting and give tutorials and there will be plenty of time to photograph Tara using the different set ups. The session will start at 10.00am and finish at 4.00pm, the last hour of which will be a tutorial on how to process the images from the day in Lightroom and Photoshop.

To book on and pay please use this link. It is a private event so there is a password to enter the page, the password is - Bristolps

We are expecting this to be a well-attended event and that the parking may be an issue as we do not expect there will be enough parking spaces as it’s a working day and all the other units on the estate will be in use so please think about parking elsewhere or perhaps using the train.

NIK Software
If you have been running NIK software as the free download from Google, you will no doubt be aware that Google sold the programme to a company called DxO. They have now released the latest version, which is sadly no longer free, but still reasonably priced at just under forty quid. Follow this link for more details.

Ospreys
If you're interested in Ospreys, or just want to see some good wildlife images, follow this link.

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

Monday July 23rd: Producing B and W images in Lightroom.

The following is from BTW leader, David Grierson:

YouTube: Many members have mentioned certain names who have great learning sites on YouTube. What I’d like to create is a database of these names so we can all benefit.
A couple I use are:
  • Anthony Morganti - click here
  • Photos in colour - click here
Please email your “go to” sites to mail@dgrierson.co.uk and I’ll publish the results.

Following on from the recent talk on mount cutters by Longridge, they have now written to say that members can get a discount on the cutters, however to get this discount, orders will have to be placed over the phone, quoting Bristol Photographic Society and Chris Longridge.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
