April 2020 Alumni Updates

COVID-19 update from Dean Gupta

Dear Broad alumni,

It has been truly heartwarming to see many of you in leadership roles pivoting your businesses to aid first responders and others in this crisis. Remarkable stories are emerging from the Industry Source, headed by Larry Gaynor (B.A. Accounting ’77), Carhartt, headed by Linda Hubbard (B.A. Accounting ’82), and Lear Corporation, headed by Ray Scott (MBA ’02), who have shifted their production capacities to manufacture masks, gowns and other critical supplies for hospitals. Companies are also stepping up to make donations — Del Monte Foods, headed by Greg Longstreet (B.A. General Business ’92), made a significant contribution of food products to Feeding America.

These are just a few examples of how Spartans are leading the way and doing their part during this time, truly showcasing our collective strength.

In addition, our Broad Spartan students are showing their strength by taking on new challenges to their learning environment every day. Their spirit hasn’t faltered as they have had to take exams, participate in group projects and seek internships and jobs in a virtual space. We especially welcome you to share a message of encouragement and congratulations to our Class of 2020, as they will take their next steps in a few short weeks.

But there are emerging needs that vary from student to student as well: airfare to travel home, internet accessibility, digital tools for online learning or even groceries for those still in East Lansing. I am happy to share that we have recently created the Dean’s Fund for Emergency Support of Students and have been working alongside the Office of Financial Aid to help fill these gaps. As alumni and friends of the Broad College, I wanted to make you aware of this resource so that you may consider donating to directly support our students and share with others who may be able to help at this time.

Knowing that our fellow Spartans are here for us during this time is what truly helps us to aim higher, do better and keep going. As we all continue to navigate this uncertain time, please remember to support and uplift one another and show value to all members of our community.

With sincerity and in Spartan service,

Sanjay Gupta
