DAVID THOMSON will discuss
The Moment of Psycho
Wednesday, December 2 at 7 PM
One of America's most respected film critics and historians will be here to talk about the horror and inspiration of Hitchcock's greatest film. In The Moment of Psycho: How Alfred Hitchcock Taught America to Love Murder, Thomson draws on
his encyclopedic knowledge of Hollywood, and explains how Hitchcock made Psycho as a direct challenge to Hollywood on nearly every standard he could find. When Psycho premiered in New York in 1960, nothing like it had existed before.
Psycho was not just a sensation in film, Thomson argues; it altered the very nature of our desires.
Thomson, who lives in San Francisco, has written many books on film, including The Biographical Dictionary of Film and Rosebud. He regularly contributes film commentary to several periodicals, including The New York Times and The Guardian.

Learn to Knit a
Fair Isle Falling Snow Stocking
Classes begin Sunday, December 6 at 10 AM
Make your own stocking this year! Learn to do a two-color cast-on, make a Latvian plait, turn a short-row heel, read a color chart, and, of course, do stranded colorwork all while knitting this pretty stocking. As the designer says, this is a great way to ease into knitting socks — no second sock syndrome!

DAVE EGGERS will sign
The Wild Things and Zeitoun
Tuesday, December 8 at 1 PM*
We are pleased to welcome Dave Eggers, editor of McSweeneys and cofounder of 826 National (a network of nonprofit writing and tutoring centers for youth), who will sign his two latest books, The Wild Things and Zeitoun.
The Wild Things is loosely based on the storybook by Maurice Sendak and the screenplay Eggers co-wrote with Spike Jonze (now in theaters). We will have copies of the Collector's Edition available, which features a furry cover.
Zeitoun is the story of a prosperous Syrian-American and father of four, who stayed behind during Hurricane Katrina to protect his house and contracting business. After traveling the flooded streets of New Orleans in a secondhand canoe to help those in need, Zeitoun abruptly disappeared. Eggers spent three years researching to find out why, and the result is a riveting, haunting and eloquent story. Like his earlier book, What is the What, Eggers wrote Zeitoun in close collaboration with its subjects.
