John 20:29 (ESV) Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
THE JOY OF EASTER
There are many things that give us joy during the Easter season. The celebration of the Savior's resurrection often brings children back home, which brings us happiness. We gather to eat special foods, which also can bring us happiness. The prospect of Spring arriving is a hopeful thing, especially in those places covered with snow. As a child, I couldn't wait to find my Easter basket full of candy, and a special gift.
The true joy of Easter springs from a risen, living Jesus. These other things are temporary joys, but the joy that He brings is eternal. God grant us grace that the true joy of Easter is never replaced by these other things.
For Thomas, Easter joy sprang from seeing and touching a living Jesus. He staunchly and scientifically maintained that he needed proof, proof provided by his senses, to believe Jesus had really and truly arisen from death. The Lord Jesus is merciful and despite Thomas' weakness of faith (trusting in his senses over Jesus' promise) he obtained his "proof."
We are not at a loss because we have not been afforded the same opportunity to touch the Lord of Life. No indeed! The risen Jesus chided Thomas for his reliance on his own senses while also comforting all those who trust in Him, having neither seen or physically handled Him. Saving faith is never at a disadvantage because it clings to a living Jesus and obtains from Him all the blessings of heaven.
Blessed are they that have not seen and yet whose faith hath constant been,
In life eternal they shall reign. Alleluia!
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 208:8)
